Nibbles was another classroom rat that I had to wait for; a rat that my teacher and I both loved.  She was the runt of her litter, a small rat with plenty of health problems such as a bad heart and respiratory disease.  She was a chocolate rat with a white cross on her chest (European Irish markings) and she was by far the sweetest rat I've met.  Since she chewed her toenails, she had very soft paws, and so she  made a great shoulder rat.  She never scratched up my neck like Sage did.  She couldn't run very far before stopping to gasp for breath, so she would sit on my shoulder while Sage wore herself out down below.  Nibbles had many nicknames; such as Nibbles the Neat, since she was constantly grooming herself, and Pigeon, since she made so many small cooing noises that I found out were the signs of a disease called  mycoplasma.  Nibbles died from heart failure one afternoon; I wasn't with her when she passed on, which made me even more miserable, and Sage was never quite the same after she was gone.
