I couldn't help it, I had to keep going back to that pet store looking for rats. I felt horrible for them in such awful conditions, and I wanted to provide a good life for at least a few of them. On one such visit I found Leila, a lilac almost-bareback rat with ruby eyes. She was in a tank with over 50 rats, piled three deep in a small aquarium. Some were as small as my little finger, others almost adult. I was amazed to see the complete ignorance of the staff, they had no concept of bad sanitation. All those rats, in one cage, with no water and no food, and their bedding wasn't exactly clean either. Leila was one of the only rats brave enough to sniff my hand, and when she slowly took ahold of it and climbed on I couldn't let her stay there to be snake food. I took her home with me and was absolutely STUNNED to see that I had just purchased Sage II!!!! She had an identical personality to my very first rat, with an insatiable curiousity, unmatched bravery, and melt-your-heart sweetness to top it off. She was introduced to the others in under a half an hour, as Gudie had been, with an equal amount of calmness on all parts. She was instantly exploring the tubes and poking her nose in all the corners of the cages, and she thought nothing of fighting off the gargantuan rats she now lived with over food or a bed. No one was going to push HER around! Leila has quickly become a favorite to all, and especially to me.
