Chicagoland Shepherd Rescue Success Stories

"Canada was brought in to AWL by her owners. The vets staff recommended putting her down because of the scarring on her back legs and feet (from an unknown source) but you wouldn't let them. Canada is now know as Black Magic and currently being trained by a volunteer group to be a wheelchair assistance dog. She came in third (out of 75 dogs) at the group's annual obedience competition! And she had to do the obedience routine on both sides of her handler!! She has already been paired with the person she will eventually do the service work for - and it was love at first sight! She has to finish her training program and get her hips x-rayed before the placement is finalized. Her trainer assures me that even if her hips aren't good enough, they will find some type of service work for her - maybe a hearing dog. They say she is too good to let go!!
Apollo was one of a litter of pups found and brought in to AWL in bad shape. Instead of putting down the sickly pups, you fostered them out and brought them back to health. Apollo is now Thunder and living with a man that used to train and handle German Shepherds during the Vietnam War. He swears that Thunder is the reincarnation of a dog that gave up its life to save his during the war. Next year Thunder will march with his owner and the other vets in the Memorial Day parade (he was too young this year).
Jupiter was adopted by my vet - someone who places great importance on a dog's temperament and has a special place in his heart for long-coated Shepherds. Jupiter's crowning moment was when he first met their autistic son - and their son responded to him! Something he's never done with any of their other dogs.
And Audrey Phoenix - what a turnaround! She was the skinny, dirty, terrified female stray that would never have had a chance with anyone else! Most people would never have looked past the fear in her eyes. But you were sure there was something there worth saving - and you were right! Once out of the shelter, cleaned up and fed well - she blossomed! She is now in a home where they adore her!! She is a bundle of energy and is gaining self-confidence every day!"
