It was a crisp, rainy evening, and this poor guy was wandering the streets cold, alone, and hungry. He had made his way onto a very busy street, 95th Street to be exact, when a couple driving by saw him get skimmed by a car. Fearing the worst, they jumped out of their car and gathered him from the median, then drove him to Animal Welfare League. I was there the night that he came in, and when I heard the dreaded "hit by car" over the intercom, I immediately dashed to exam C. Amazingly, the dal appeared pretty much unscathed, other than a few scratches on his side. He was very, very dirty, flea infested, and had a nasty case of flea bite dermatitis. He was also quite hungry.
The first thing that became apparent about this boy was that he is exceptionally well mannered. At some time in his life, someone committed a lot of time to him, and he is completely obedience trained. He is gentle and sweet. He is also one of the calmest, quietest dogs that I have ever met. He walks well on a lead, sits, stays, gives paw, etc. He also proved to be completely housebroken. He absolutely will not go to the bathroom in his cage, but waits patiently for members of staff to walk him. When he is ready to go out, he signals by simply sitting next to his cage door.
After a full exam, it was determined that he sustained no injuries from his brush with the car, and he would be suitable to be placed for adoption if not claimed. Despite what a wonderful dog he is, no one came to claim him, or even went looking for him. No one could ask for a more behaved dog, and we felt that he would be quickly adopted. Upon his adoption check, it was discerned that he is about 4 years old and in excellent health. However, upon drawing his blood test, it was discovered that he is heartworm positive. When we learned of his condition, we vowed to treat him- if any dog deserves a second chance at life, it is him!
For his continued care, rehabilitation, and eventual placement, we need the following:
Donations
Funds to cover his medical bills and supplies when he is in a foster home.
Foster home
A volunteer to care for him for the two months while he is treated and certified free from heartworm. The shelter will provide all supplies and medical treatment, the foster home only needs to provide the love.
An adoptive family
Once he is well, he deserves a family to call his own. He is wonderfully gentle, and would make a great companion for almost anyone. Once he is better, he will be dog tested, but so far, he has exhibited no aggression toward anyone. He is very "interested" in cats, and thus, would most likely not be suitable for a home with them. His balanced temperament and kind demeanor would make him great for a family with children.
UPDATE: This guy is almost done with his heartworm treatment, and his foster family will be adopting him! Thank you Janat, Pamela, and DalSavers for making this possible!
