"Buddy," a young male akita, came to Animal Welfare League as a stray. He was very gentle and obedient, and it is hard to believe that his owners wouldn't tag or chip him, or come to the shelter to find him. When his stray hold ended, he began coming down with kennel cough. Coincidentally, at that time, Midwest Akita Rescue Society had a rescue table set up in our hall as part of the first annual Breed Rescue Education series. When Deanna O'Brien and I brought him out to the run and saw what a wonderful dog he was, Deanna just couldn't leave him behind. Coming back from the run, I referred to him as "Buddy," as I do most male stray that come in nameless, and Deanna decided right then that the name would be appropriate for him, and kept it.
"Buddy's" new adoptive home, the Bemis family, have decided to rename him "Apollo." Pictured above is "Buddy" with his akita housemate, "Kira." Since adopting "Apollo," the Bemis family have become active participants in akita rescue and have helped with transport of Animal Welfare League's akitas to their rescue foster homes.
