The original purpose of the Australian Shepherd was to herd livestock. From their origins with the Basque Shepherds, to their development in the United States, they were bred to herd. With the changes in the livestock industry and lifestyles, most Aussies do not have the opportunity to actually work stock. Many individuals are interested in training and
working their dogs to preserve the talents and abilities of
the breed. Herding also provides a wonderful
opportunity for you to develop a special bond with your dog. You and
the dog must work as a team and learn to trust each other.
Although they must work with the handler, dogs
with great instinct will demonstrate great thinking and
judgment skills. Working at the job they were meant to
do often ignites a wonderful spirit in a herding dog and
creates a bond unlike any other with the Competitive herding trials are offered by several organizations, including AKC, ASCA, AHBA, and local clubs and organizations. This provides a venue to show off your dogs abilities and to socialize and learn with others that have similar interests. It is also interesting to see how other breeds work and learn different styles and methods of training.
