I have been employed at Canadian Forces Fleet School Esquimalt three times in my career
now. The first time was from Jan 92 - Apr 93 as an instructor. I taught equipment, oceanography and passive acoustic analysis to new QL3 (see my trade)
students.
My second tour began in Aug of 97 and ended in March of 99. I was the Standards Petty Officer for the Acoustic Section. I acted as a subject matter expert for my trade and ensured that all course ware was developed effectively as well as developed and maintained all exams for the trainees. There are many other duties that go along with this job relating to training. You participate in boards for trade development and attend Training Review Boards when students are experiencing difficulties.
The pace of an office job is no where near as intense as that of shipboard life and provides you with a needed break after many years at sea. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at CFFS Esquimalt Standards and left feeling I had made a worthy contribution in my time there.
With my promotion to Chief Petty Officer Second Class as of 04/01/99 I had to return to sea and do my time as a "Combat Department Chief" on HMCS Algonquin - DDG 283.
If you have hopped over to my page on HMCS Algonquin, you will see that after
a quick 20 month tour, I landed back ashore at the Fleet School (11 Sep 2000) -
this time as the "Senior Acoustic Instructor". The title is a bit
deceiving as I actually don't spend much time teaching, but rather act in a
managerial role. I am responsible to the Combat Division Commander and the Fleet
School Commandant for the effective day to day operation of the Acoustic
Section. We also provided refresher training support to the ASW teams on each
ship based in MARPAC. This training includes 510 sonar, CANTASS (Canadian Towed
Array), Target Motion Analysis and Oceanography training.
