SAC MSET ASSOCIATION QUARTERLY REPORT

SAC MSET NEWSLETTER –March 1, 2009

TO:  TEAM MEMBERS

FROM:  MSET EXECUTIVE BOARD, MIKE GENTILE PRESIDENT, SHELL611@AOL.COM

REUNION 2009 “OMAHA, NE”

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT:

Got busy with Grandfather Duties and almost forgot my MSET Duties.  Judy got me back on track gave me a deadline for my input and told me to get busy, so here   I am

I met with Pete Mariniello, Tom Vitimvos, Frank Palumbo and Walt and Lea Ide. All agreed to have a joint LG Staff (which MSET is part of) and MSET Reunion. This will occur at the reunion scheduled for October 2009 in Omaha. Walt is working with Pete on the details that will bring this all together. We will continue with our separate business meeting but will have a joint diner. We will also open our hospitality room for the LG Members and old MSET friends to meet and visit.

We are also adding two new features to our Newsletter, “In My View” provided by Frank Long our Chief Editor. I am sure Frank will welcome inputs from the group for his articles. Franks first two articles support my conviction he is the right man for the job.

The other new feature is “Tips from Patty” under the leadership of Pat Harris. Pat will provide tips on sewing and other craft type items of interest. Again I am sure Pat will welcome all the help she can get for the other CRAFTY ladies in our group.

We will also provide inputs from our Treasurer Bob Gallup so everyone is updated on our financial health.

For our Formal Association Meeting I would like to have an agenda that we will establish based on the inputs of our group. Please provide Judy with items you would like discussed during our meeting. We will establish an agenda and distribute to all before the reunion and then again when you register for the reunion. Some issues we need to consider and are ready to make decisions on:

Where should we hold our future reunions and should we consider isolating to select locations that is central to all whom normally attend.

How do we increase our membership and interest MSETERS from other eras to attend. From my observation it appears we have a strong representation from the 1970 era but very few attend from other year groups and I do not completely understand the reason why.

When I was asked to consider the position of President of our organization I almost said no (only because I am still very much involved in running the business Kay and I own). What changed my mind was a fellow member named Jessie Hyde. Jessie and I shared several things in common. The one single thing that stood out front was the enjoyment we both had seeing our old traveling buddies and talking about times. Jess and I sometime even did a little Soap Boxing. Jess was very ill (although he never gave any indication of how ill he really was) but he made sure he attended each reunion his frail body allowed him to attend. Jess recently passed away but he is one member who will always attend our reunions, maybe not in body but most surly in spirit. I would like to see our gathering continue and with your help we will continue to have a gathering for members like Jess to attend.

I also want to provide my view on the function of the Executive Board. This board is here to serve you our members. In that process we gather information on what you, the members, want and provide an agenda for our organization to vote on. The members provide the direction we will go in. Once we have a defined direction/decision we, the Executive Board, will then put a plan together to implement what the group wants and then manage the process to completion.  So you the members must tell us what you want.

From the Desk of the Treasurer

Welcome to 2009 and as you will learn in this newsletter another great reunion planned in Omaha in October.   Our new board members and the Omaha planning committee are trying to reach every member and inviting them to this exciting reunion.  However, as Treasurer, it is my duty to collect our annual membership dues.  The dues help pay for all the expenses acquired in maintaining our annual MSET websites, secretarial expenses and miscellaneous operating expenses.   Our annual dues are the same as they always have been since day one.  They are $20 annually.  If you are wondering how you stand in respect to dues payments, just e-mail me at rgallup@prodigy.net or call 727-785-3915.  To pay your annual dues,  you can either send  a check addressed to:  MSET Association   Attn: Robert Gallup,  388 Buckingham PL,  Palm Harbor, FL  34684 or you can pay me at the reunion in Omaha.  If, you are sending a check please mark the year(s) you are paying in the "FOR" blank on the lower left side of your check.

Note from the Managing Director, our Secretary

Jan and Feb. have flown by and March is nearly behind us!!  No time like the present to make sure that you have our October reunion on you calendar.  It will be here before you know it.  It looks as though Walt and his team have put together a really nice dinner.

We hope that you enjoy the additions to the newsletter.  Pat Harris was kind enough to submit her craft ideas and we look forward to more terrific suggestions from her.  Frank Long's "My View" is such a great read and I know that one and all will identify with his insights.  I, for one, look forward to his next missive.

Great news to relay to you about air transportation.  Air Tran is now servicing the Branson area.  So, for those of you that will be flying into Branson in 2010, keep that in mind.  The rates are terrific.

In My View by Frank Long

We are engaged in what the most optimistic person must realize is an economic recession. We are on a fixed income, we still have Medicare and Tricare for life and current Legislation insures our cost-of living raises. WHY WORRY?  Because we are members of society and reside in this great nation. Sadly, we can expect an increase in burglary, robberies, scams, shoplifting and attempts at identity theft.  Plus, an increase in homeless people to include a significant increase in young people under seventeen. And a large reduction in charitable giving. My neighbor, a police officer and a recent military retiree, stated that the number of suicides and attempted suicides will also take an upward jump.

However, everything is not gloom and doom. Given today’s volunteer military force structure, a recession has always “spiked” the number of highly qualified young people wanting to join the military service. This opportunity should be aided by the recent announcement that the Army and Marine manpower ceilings were raised thirteen thousand and eight thousand, respectively.

I do not like to see our country’s youth sent in harms way. However I deplore the fact that fewer and fewer of our local, state and national political leaders have no military experience. To this end, I revel in the fact that more of our youth may engage in the military experience. In this respect, I am the optimist, because this has to bode well for this nation’s future.

In My View Article 2

Military families are resilient, because that is the nature of the profession.  However, the foundation for this phenomenon is that special person of our generation, “the military wife”. How was she able to cope with numerous moves when the re-location allowance never covered the expense of the move? When the husband went to “sign in” and begin the new duty assignment; the wife greeted the movers, allocated the household goods in the new quarters, did the necessary shopping, located the new school(s), visited the hospital and brought the kids shot records up to date, consoled the angry child who vowed that their life had been ruined once again because they had to leave their school and friends.

I smile when people with no military background commiserate about the fact that I spent time away from my family to include the year in Southeast Asia. I feel that I should tell them that the wrong member of the family received the combat pay.

Tips from Patty:

Prayer Rock

You will need a rock  (Duh!)

A square of fabric that you can cover your rock with.  Usually a 3” or 4” piece will do.

A piece of ribbon to tie up and our saying.  See end of directions.

Set rock in center of fabric, bring up 4 corners and tie with ribbon.  Attach Saying and put in bed.

PRAYER ROCK

I’m your little Prayer rock

And this is what I’ll do.

Just put me on your pillow

Till the day is through.

Then turn back the covers

And climb into your bed.

Whack! Your little Prayer Rock

Will hit you on your head.

Than you will remember

As the day is through;

To kneel and say your prayers

As you want to.

When you are finished

Just dump me on the floor

I’ll stay there through the night

To give you help once more

When you get up next morning,

Clunk! I stub your toe

So you will remember

Your morning prayers before you go

Put me back upon your pillow

When your bed is made.

Your cleaver little Prayer Rock

Will continue in your air.

Because you’re Heavenly Father

Cares and loves you so

He wants you to remember

To talk to Him, You know

These sell for $1.00 in craft booths.

Future Reunion Information
