I have lots of tales of parachute mishaps while none were tragic,
some where funny and others frightening. The one I remember most is
when we had to jump with the cherry jumpers (new guys to the Regiment).
We were at a altitude of 1000 ft agl when the green light flashed on. In a
matter of seconds all 32 of us exited the 130 Hercules Aircraft. As we
were coming down.
I was checking around me for other jumpers in the air when this new guy starts to drift towards me. I scream at him to pull away while I pulled on my risers to drift in the other direction. Sure enough as he goes under me, his parachute wraps around me(wild feeling for a second or 2). The next thing I see is green silk, his face, body, boots and then sky. What happened was when he drifted towards me he slipped under me and stole my air. This made my parachute collapse and had me fall like a rock until my chute was clear of him. Once I fell about 30 ft I heard my chute rustling to open, then pop, its blossoms open. As I'm giving him hell I see him drop right in front of me, just like I did to him. We did this twice and just about 40 feet before we hit the ground we separated, we were very lucky unlike some poor guys this happen to before. As soon as I hit the ground I was up with my harness dragging my chute screaming at the guy for not doing proper flight procedure. Later on, I thought about the incident and figured that was one major rush! As for the guy that I met in the air, we became good friends, eh Shane!. |
