Mustangs Restoration Projects
The mustangs have taken on the project of restoring the MMI cannon located on the quad. Since the begining of the 99-00 school year the Mustangs have held various fundraisers, in order to restore the once proud cannon. We would also like to thank Dr. Nicholas Pantaleone for his donation, as well as some of the staff members of MMI without your help the project would have gone no where.
This is what we faced. The cannon had gone into such disrepair that the wheels had rotted off
It had been a tradition for some of the Judson college girls to come over to the campus and paint the cannon as a joke. The cannon has been every color form yellow to pink, and infact had so many layers of paint that in some places, the build up was an inch thick.
To remove all the paint, the Mustangs rented an industrial sand blaster. After spending 2 days blasting and using 2000 pounds of sand, 99% of the paint had been removed. From there came the task of chiping away paint from all the hard to reach places the blaster could not reach.
By the time we chiped off the last of the old paint and cleaned the bare metal it was the day before Alumni weekend. That Friday we applied a spray primer and then working late into the night with the high beams of two cars, we applied the high gloss black paint. The good part about working late, was that we missed a manditory play. So the above photos are what the Alumni saw, the cannon looked great but the base still looked bad. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The next day was spent chiping away at the concrete base to remove all of its paint. After the paint had been removed it was painted Mustang Grey, so that compleated the out side. Now we are waiting to install a firing mechinism that will allow us to fire the cannon every morning. The only thing left to fully restore the cannon are the wheels.
The above pictures are all that is left of the original wheels. They had rotted so badly that only one spoke is left from the pair. What we need are a new pair of 42 inch carraige wheels to fully restore our cannon. All ready we have recived several donations to buy the new wheels, but we are still short. If you are interested in helping please either contact the Mustang commander, or the school.
