The Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal was instituded in 1961. For Meritorious Service or achivement in a combat or non-combat situation based on sustained performance of a superlative nature. Originally a ribbon-only award: "Secretary of the Navy Commendation for Achievement Award with Ribbon". In 1967 it changed to the present form.
