Typed Gens Nostra document. Relationship to the informant was ‘Oud Tante’ (great-aunt):
‘She died of old age at St Bernardus. Cornelia Hegeman-van Bommel was a sister of Petrus Josephus van Bommel…….
‘Zij overleed van ouderdom in St. Bernardus.
Cornelia Hegeman-van Bommel was een (‘dochter’ crossed out in pen and replaced with) zuster van Petrus Josephus van Bommel ‘en Anna Maria Hesslinghuis.’ crossed out with pen).
Pauw Hegeman was jarenlang tamboer-majoor bij the Kon. Marine in den Helder. Waaraan hij stierf is onbekend.’

100 Willem HASLINGHUIS. Hasslinghuis. Born ca 1773 (as estimated at his
death) at Suderwich near Recklinghausen, Parish of St Johann, (but his death
record says ‘Keulen’ - Cologne), Germany. His brother, parents and relatives
certainly came from Suderwich near Recklinghausen where generations of the
Haslinghaus family are recorded in the parish registers of St Johann.
Died, 29 June 1823, Rotterdam, as Willem Haslinghuijs, aged 50 jaar, 10
months and 4 days, born at Keulen (sic), son of Frederik (sic) Haslinghuijs,
wife of Maria van der Kruijt. I believe Keulen and Frederik to be mistakes
made by whoever the informant for his death record was. His brother’s father
was recorded as Joseph. Frederick occurs nowhere in the Haslinghuis
family.
On 14 Jan 1798 recorded as ‘jongeman’ (bachelor) from ‘Westphalen’, living
at the Schiedamschendijk.
Banns 30 Dec 1797 when Maria was living at the Wijnstraat Overschie.
He married, 14 Jan 1798, Rotterdam:
101 Maria van der KRUIJT. Kruit. Kruid. Baptised 29 May 1774, Overschie,
daughter of Tijs (Matthijs) van der Kruijt and Klasijntje van Valkenburg, (wit:
Pleuntje Brandenburg).
Died, 18 Feb 1832, Rotterdam, as Maria van der Kruijt, aged 61 years, 10
months and 22 days, born at Overschie, as daughter of ‘Jan’ van der Kruijt
and Clasina Valkenburg and the widow of Willem Haslinghuijs.
Of the three Marias with this name this one has her mother clearly identified as
Clasina (Klasijntje) (van) Valkenburg at birth and death. Her father was clearly
surnamed van der Kruijt but the informant at her death said Jan instead of Tijs
or Mathhijs. The estimation of her age at death is closest to this Maria (27 Mar
1770 or 27 May 1771 depending on how you calculate the years, months and
days from the day of her death). See discussion of her identification issues at the
end of this document.
Marriage record (translated): ‘Willem Gouijs Hasseling, bachelor, (of) Westp
Halen, living at: Schiedamschendijk. Bride: Maria van der Kruit, spinster, (of)

1797) - comment: ‘Zij zal consent bezorgen , zij heeft consent bezor’, ie ‘She
will provide consent, she has provided consent’ (wording incomplete).
There may have been some opposition to the marriage because her family was
Gereformeerd and his was Catholic - neither families appear as baptismal
witnesses for each other and no names are exchanged between the two families.

110 Hendrik MESMAN, of Schiedam? The surname could be MESMAN.
Married:
111 Maria BIERINGS, of Schiedam?
Of this marriage, including:
I. Wilhelmina MESMAN. Mostly Mesman. Wesman 1825, Wisman in 1826. Also called Hermina (1825 birth). Born ca 1805, Schiedam. At her marriage on 8 June 1825, she was Hermina Wesman, Schiedam, 20, daughter of Hendrik Wesman and Maria Bierings. Catholic.
Note: I’ve opted for Mesman because surely her daughters and a son would know what her surname was (note marriages 1861, 1861 and 1867) and plus the name was used in 1828 and 1831.
CONTINURD at No 55

Note: Gerard appears to have remarried after the death of Maria Fransen though an earlier marriage is not mentioned in the records it is unlikely that he would have remained single till he was 53. His age is right for marriage with Maria Fransen. The year of death provided by his daughter it is one year out but I still believe that the Gerard Smith below is the same as the one that married Maria Fransen (see below):
- Marriage on 29 June 1801, Vroenhoven, Gerard Smits, aged 53, born 15-10-1748 at Stockhem, son of Edmond Smits and Sibilla Thewissen, to (bride) Marie Catharine Vanijsseren, aged 38, born on 1 Jan 1763, Sint-Geertruide, daughter of Gaspar Vanijsseren and Marie Jeukens - comment: the birth date of the bridegroom is a fiction, ‘Geboorte van Bruidegom is een Fictieve datum’.

200 Joseph HASLINGHAUS. Born and died at Suderwich near Recklinghausen,
Parish of St Johann, Germany. He is likely the same Josephus who was
baptised 2 Nov 1754 and married Angela Tappe (later marriage) 15 Jan 1792
at Suderwich. That Joseph was a son of Johannes Hasslinghuis and Theresia
Gelah. The records regarding Suderwich are kept at Recklinghousen but
there are serious breaks in the records. The family goes back to the 1600s
there. Catholic. He married:
201 Geertruida ROMBECK. Born and died Suderwich near Recklinghausen,
Parish of St Johann, Germany. Catholic.
It seems that several of the family and even family friends or relatives left Suderwich around 1790 for Rotterdam. The Hillebrand and Sluijter families (see baptismal witnesses) played a role in the family both at Suderwich, Germany and in the next generation at Rotterdam. There may have been a long period of contact between the families at Rotterdam and Suderwich because my grandfather P. J. van Bommel remembered as a child an old yellowed letter in a language that he could not read. He firmly believed the letter to relate to the Haslinghuis family but had no idea they came from Germany (he had speculated Ireland, perhaps not too seriously, because red hair appeared among some of those family members). I made a transcript of a hastily written note on an old postcard by him among some family papers early in 1971 when visiting Oma at Ede:
‘Hermina en Anna Maria Hasselinghuis waren nichten d.w.z. dochters van broers, wiens vader dus ook en Hasselinghuis was en dit waarschijnlijk een buitenlander was. Haslinghuis of Hesselinghaus dit onderste herinner ik uit mijn kinderjaaren waarin ook nog een brief speelt in en vreemde taal geschreven maar die ik later nooit meer gezien heb. Die brief was oud want er was vergeeld’.

II. Willem HASLINGHUIS. Hasslinghuis. Born ca 1773 (see death record) at
Suderwich near Recklinghausen, Parish of St Johann, (Keulen, or Cologne, on
his death record), Germany. His brother, parents and relatives certainly
came from Suderwich near Recklinghausen.
His brother’s father
was recorded as Joseph, and the name Frederick occurs nowhere in the Haslinghuis family.
His brother Josephus was recorded as coming from ‘Suderwig int Keul land’ (the writing looks like ‘Suderwich int Keul Ceand’), the informants at Willem’s death may have thought that indicated somewhere at Cologne.
Although Willem was recorded on April 17, 1798 as from (van) ‘Westphalen’, we know he is a brother to Josephus because both them and their wives appear at each other’s childrens’ baptisms. CONTINUED AT No 100.
