My thanks to my mother, J. C. Varman-van Bommel, who often talked about her Oostburg relatives and my grandmother, Dina Elizabeth van Bommel - de Vos, who also enthused me with stories and memories of Oostburg and district and also of Zierikzee. Her third cousin was historian and archivist of Zierikzee, Pieter Dignus de Vos. The latter's publication (1916) on the descent of the de Vos family forms the backbone of the de Vos ascent, although I researched the ascent of the female lines.
My greatest thanks go to Mr E.H.Heeringa, now of Emmeloord, who researched my kwartierstaat at Oostburg, beyond what my grandmother, mother and family papers could inform me. This was to the period of about 1700 in relation to the families German, Cuvelje, Poisonnier and Risseeuw. For the former three names, Mr Heeringa prepared extensive genealogies of descent. He also sent me numerous articles and paper clippings in regard to the family and the bombing of Zeeland-Flanders during World War II. Also two pictorial books on Oostburg and Zeeland-Flanders (van Geyt Productions) - oh so appreciated here in far-off Australia .

I'd particularly like to thank Mary Risseeuw of the USA who was able to help me to add considerably to the Risseeuw kwartierstaat and connected families.
