FAMILY FERMIN/VERMIN CHART OF DESCENT
Surname Pronunciation and Spelling
Though it seems that the family name originally was spelled beginning with an F in French-speaking areas, the dialect at Maastricht seems to have favoured the more robust pronunciation of V. Interestingly the name Vermin in South Holland, at least, is pronounced as fermin, just as my father's first name, Vic, is pronounced fic. There is also a French pronunciation of the surname, used up to my grandfather's day by some, rendered something like far-maa - hence father's choice of Varman when he was strongly advised by Australian government officials in 1954 to change his surname. A better solution might have been to change the name to Fermin but there was some vague family memory of the 'protestant branch' having changed their name to that.
The many strange spellings of the surname was due to the priest or scribe writing down what he thought he heard or what he thought the surname to be. There is no old surname that has not been spelled in many different ways. There is some indication that the name did go through some pronunciation changes at Maastricht but that may have been due to fashions in speech generally at Maastricht (Fremin, Fermijn, Fermien, Fermingh and the same with a V) but the name settled back to Vermin or Fermin by the late 1700s. The spelling Freument with it's variations, is almost certainly the result of a priest mixing up our family with that of another at the same parish because it only occurs at the parish church of St Martinus at Wijk, Maastricht. Signatures from the late 1700s to the 1880s suggest a preference for Vermin, though Petrus Josephus , our ancestor, seems to have preferred Fermin. There are instances where Vermin and Fermin appear on documents signed by members of the same family.
It wasn't until the 1890s that, Hendrick Auguste Vermin, the grandson of Petrus Augustus Vermin 1816-1865 (elder brother of Johannes Maximiliaan Vermin (1818-1887), our ancestor) wanted to change the spelling from the V to F officially. The application to make this change was successful in 1909. It was argued then that the V spelling was an administrative mistake but this does not appear to be the case when the documentation of the family is closely examined. All the living descendants of Petrus Auguste Vermin had their surnames changed to Fermin and the birth entries of these people retrospectively modified by striking out the old spelling. From that time onward all the male descendants of Petrus Auguste bear the surname Fermin and all the descendants of his brother Johannes Maximiliaan bear the surname Vermin. A curious twist of history has it that Petrus Auguste was registered on his birth with the surname Vermin and Johannes Maximiliaan was registered with the surname Fermin but their descendants bear their surnames in reverse to this.
For the Australian descendants of Johannes Maximiliaan, the name Varman was officially ratified in 1955 (applied for in November 1954 at Fremantle, Western Australia). As the Dutch government does not recognize this name change, the only member of the family retaining Dutch citizenship has the surname Vermin on his pass port while using the name Varman when resident in Australia.
An early branch of the family that settled in The Hague by 1743, the descendants of Henricus Vermin (baptised in 1706 as Fermijn), all retain the name Vermin. That family shifted to Rotterdam and a large number of descendants thrived at Noordwijkerhout. One descendant migrated to Sydney during the 1970s and sensibly changed the name from Vermin to Fermin.
Family Origins
Despite many years of research and in recent years with the intensive and thorough investigation, on my behalf, by the well-known Maastricht genealogist, Mr Jules M Bouvrie, I have come no closer than my father's third cousin, family historian, Mr A.A.M. Stols, in finding origins beyond Jan Fermin. At least we now know that he was living at Visé, in the province of Liége (part of modern Belgium) before he settled permanently in Maastricht around 1652.
The family legends for both the Vermin and Fermin branches are remarkably consistent. This is judging by what my father told me during the 1960s and what I recently read in regard to A.A.M. Stols account of what his aunt 'Tante Octavie' Claus-Fermin (second cousin of my grandfather) had said. Namely that the family originated in France and that they were a 'ridder' or knightly family.
A third cousin of the Vermin branch, Mr Franklin F.M.A. Thijs, told me that there was a legend that the family came from Verviers. This place is a little further away than Visé is from Maastricht and is part of the province of Liége. These lands at one time were under the domination of France but not part of France, though French speaking. This needs to be investigated.
A.A.M. Stols suggested Paris as a place of origin because of a burial entry in the church registers of St Martinus, Wijk, Maastricht: "Jacobus Fremin 'Natiff de Paris', 30 Oct 1673. Considering the rarity of the surname in northern Europe it is surprising that so many seemingly unrelated Fermins (spelling variations) turning up at Maastricht. A Mathias Fermin is recorded before 1644 but he appears to be unrelated too. One of the most famous unrelated Fermins was a Philippe Fermin from a strictly French protestant family with connections in Berlin but origins firmly in Orange, France. That family bore canting arms, unlike ours. Elsewhere in the Netherlands, there was a Jeroen Fermin, listed as botellier to the Prince of Orange, The Hague, in 1612 and in 1638 as alias Guillaume Fermijn (Fermin, Fremin) as the kastelijn 'of His Excellency' at Castle Zuylensteyn. Other nominations were Orange in France and Bruges in Belgium. In the latter place there was a grave to the 1400s with the family arms engraved on it (but which I have not been able to track down). Mr Bouvrie has found a Johan Fermin, a sculptor of the French school working at Cambrai (Kamerijk) during the 1400s and concentrations of Fermins in the French city of Caens.
All we know is that the first Joannis (Jan, Jean) Fermin (Fremin, Firmin, Fermingh etc) was qualified to enter the textile guild and that he also had a long military career. He probably couldn't write as he signed with a mark, a cross with terminating bars. The last port of call before Maastricht (where the family is still represented) was Visé, the earliest record there being in regard to the baptism of his son, Joannes on 1 July 1643. He was a French speaker. His second wife, our ancestor, Maria Chapley had her origins in Visé but his first wife at Visé, Maria Hamekers, has no connections there. There was a family Haemekers in Maastricht from which we are descended elsewhere on the family tree but without any obvious connection. And so I conclude, as A.A.M. Stols did, the discovery of the origins of the family will be the result of a chance find.
Conventions
The surnames are spelled in most cases as they are found in baptismal or government registers, exceptions were made for the headings of the direct ancestors such as in (I) Joannis 'Jan' Fermin: as in his case we only know his name from the birth registrations of his children: between 1643 and 1660 his name was spelled, Fremin, Firmin, Vermingh, Frument, Fremont and Freument. However, in a legal document dating to 1669, his name was spelled 'Fermin'
Before the Napoleonic period birth dates were rarely recorded but baptisms were. The baptisms were usually within a few days of the birth, sometimes on the same day. The same applies to burials, these are indicated by a cross (+).
Many of the side branches have been omitted here but will be added in time.
