Dr VARMAN'S
LONGRIDGE
Longridge Stables
The old stables at Longridge a very long convict-built structure, cobbled inside with evidence of stalls. Large fig trtees are indicator's of Second Settlement (1825-1856) activity on Norfolk Island. Longridge was an agricultural establishment.
The Arches, Longridge
Built toward the close of the Second
Settlement, the
Arches represent an extravagance rarely encountered in a penal settlement. The purpose of the structure is unclear but considering the drainage within the structure, the building may have been intended as stables or housing for carts and carriages. There may have been loading facilities for, say, grain from the upper floor. There are no contemporary illustrations of the building but the shape of the roof and other features may be reconstructed from the evidence as seen in the remaining stonework.
