BASIC PRINCIPLES
"What an audience remembers is not what you say
but what they thought about what you said."
PACE
Rate of Word Delivery.
• Don't change your normal fluctuating style.
• Faster = more enthusiasm; slower = more emphasis.
Rate of Idea Delivery.
• Silent pauses give people time to process ideas. This is not instinctive!
TIMING
Time Distortion Effect - the effect of Adrenalin.
• Vital for a good performance, but needs controlling.
• Disorientation.
• Exaggerate pauses otherwise you will relapse.
FEATURES OF CONVERSATIONAL STYLE
The two goals of message and personality are best achieved in normal conversational style. Normal conversation has certain characteristics, including:
• We pause all over the place.
• We do not speak grammatically correct English. We do not talk in prose.
• Conversation is two way - but the listener plays a controlling role on pace.
• All of us have different styles - like finger prints, we are unique.
• Body language - forget it, be yourself.
First Pause - "Thinking Pause"
• You appear thoughtful and capable, not slick or glib.
• Creates anticipation.
• Shows confidence, commands respect.
• More articulate. Adds natural flow and emphasis to words that follow.
Second Pause - "Did you get that pause?"
• Lets the audience compare your ideas with theirs.
• Keeps conversation two way so the audience feels you are interested in their response.
• Shows confidence and commitment.
WHAT USUALLY GOES WRONG
Information is put over faster than the audience can receive - ie Rate of Idea Delivery is too fast.
Eye contact is random so has little impact on the audience.
A poor impression is created of the person speaking.
