This painting is in Bert's Art Gallery for sentimental reasons.
The fishing boat on the right is the HK127, which was owned by
Bert's great-grandfather Martinus Lieman, a fisherman from Harderwijk
in the Netherlands. Originally the Harderwijk-Amsterdam ferry could be seen between the two fishing boats, but the first owners of the painting found it "too crowded". The artist, Martinus Lieman, a decendant from the boat's owner who had sailed on her himsef, removed the passenger ship, but under protest. Being a former fisherman himself, he knew the Zuiderzee really was that crowded. |
