I was most impressed by Christian's photos of New York when I first saw them. His spatial awareness is quite outstanding. For instance, the photo marked Lower Manhattan, Battersea Park. Buildings old and small dwarfed by buildings new and tall. This persp ctive of history is extremely relevant in today's society. Many of Christian's other photos follow these lines. I also appreciate the photos of the other cities he has 'captured'! I would like to thank Christian for his permission to utilise his pictures of New York on the site that I am developing: www.1nyc.com Christian: I hope you get the time to produce many more photos like these...

Cher Christian, I came to your site due to the notice about the Eurofestival published in CIEL News - I'm also a member of CIEL, though almost unknown - but it took me a while to find it. Anyway, I didn't waste my time. You DO have a lot of stuff in your site and obviously I can't spend the whole night browsing through it, so I just saw a few photos and your favourite links. The links were very useful and I've bookmarked a few of them for future visits. As for the photos, I just saw those from NY. I liked it but it seems you where very impressed with the huge dimension of the place: most of those photos were taken facing the ky. Until now, the only negative side of your site is the Portuguese version. Being a Portuguese, I was curious to check it. I realized it is made by AltaVista or something, so it's not your fault, but it made me feel much safer about my future as a translato ... I will revisit your site one of these days, I'm sure. Bien à vous, José António

The reason is that you have taken me to the electronic postcards of MIT and I have rushed two off to the two children whom I tutor in computers (aged 11 and 9)... Charming children and this postcard electronically will be such a treat for them!
Thank you merci and merci beaucoup
Are you really living in Paris? I am wary of "geocities" somehow. they could be anywhere.
Me, I live with my husband here in Hollywood, California, USA. George (my husband) has two boys and 5 grandsons and one granddaughter in New York city all the way across the world it seems.
We just came back from a visit and the little girl of only four months on this earth tugged with her baby fingers at my husband's robust black mustache! she had never seen one before! her delightful face expression! if you wanted me to send you a copy of that photo I could...
Well, thank you again for your most kind referral to the MIT pages.
I found you today while reading the Link Exchange Digest and I must have liked how you wrote because I took your Web address for my "special to-do book."
I myself tried to do a banner but it must have been the wrong size as the LE folks could not "read it" they said. nonetheless, I enjoyed doing it with my first attempt at Adobe Photoshop. You will see from our Web pages we have some Marilyn photos by our friend.
All the best to you again for all your projects and for your personal happiness as well warmly I come to you after all, IT IS SUMMER!

Anyway, I'll be keeping an eye on furure developments - incidentally we recently had a client asking about just this sort of technology, we were thinking in terms of Java but MCF, if it takes off, will be ideal.

Re: Pickup (LinkExchange Digest #042): I have to say that I've found myself disappointed by the negativity about Christian ' site that required a new plugin, HotSauce.
In regards to this issue, in which I wrote a few days ago, I have recieved emails about what I said. (I mentioned not many people would stay around for this).
This digest in my opinion is for helping others find the best if not a new and alternative way to PROMOTE their web sights. As I stated previously, I am all for the new technology. However, If I am in a search engine and I do a search on JFK, It returns o er 20,000 sites. I will click on the first site. It will have a few informative articles that I have probably heard about or whatever. I go back to the search engine and click on the next. It takes close to two minutes for everything to finnally appear an then I must download a plug-in from another web sight to view the actual FILM FOOTAGE or something. By the time I get this plug-in, I could have scooped another 4 or 5 sites.
Now this is worst cast situation. But I think it is even worse when someone with a UNIQUE websight is offering something different. As web surfers are used to the JFK thing. How are we supposed to determine what is NEW and DIFFERENT. It is too common plac to see everyone saying it is, then you wait 30 minutes, and it's not.
I have used some ACTIVE X and JAVA applets in some of our page designs, but you have to dig through the content "FIRST!" in order to get to these things.
Only users who are truly interested in what your sight has to offer will undergo long wait times for downloading these plug-in features. I don't think it is smart to have these features on your INDEX page. (As was the case with the original user I respond d too.) People need to be forewarned about these long waits. Even if it is not but 45 seconds.
That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Subject: bells and whistles....
I have watched the discussion on the use of enhanced features with interest. Like many small business persons marketing on the Internet, I still have a day job; one I've held for many years. Wearing that hat, we learned many years ago that the risks associated with totally new technology are very high. No matter how many blinding colors it may produce, serial number one of anything is a manchine to avoid. It won't be debugged, support won't be widespread, and you'll pay for educating customers.
Conversely, being too far behind current technology creates a blah impression that your business just isn't up to date. The most desirable position would appear to be to use proven technology. It's relatively new, but it has come into general use. That flies in the face of most of us, who are enamored of technology, or we wouldn't be here.
Golly, that new capability that lets your page feature 3-D in-your-face images which require special glasses is just soooooo cool! Too bad only point zero zero one percent of your customers have access to the beta version of the software and special purpose hardware necessary...
Maximize the number of people who can view your page! Don't use features that haven't been out for a year or two unless they are really necessary to demonstrate your product. There are plenty of proven, mature HTML features which virtually every browser can see. What makes a page look good is planning and careful layout. Get some books on art and advertising, and applythe concepts to your page.
That's more than my two cents worth - maybe as much as ten or fifteen cents.

About the comments:
Following my posting in
ILE #036 (Subject: Some new ideas on how to attract traffic to your web site), I received a huge number of visits a d a large number of reactions - sometime positive, sometimes negative, but always interesting.
I would then like to thank all of you who were so responsive; I am presently trying to incorporate all comments received in my guest book, together with my answers to general issues that were raised on that occasion - it might still take a week or so, as am pretty busy at the moment, but everything will soon be available.
However, some reactions to my posting, especially those published in
ILE #047, prompt me to clarify a point without waiting any longer: I never wanted to suggest that the use o cutting-edge technology should be made a pre-requisite to accessing a site. It should obviously just be offered as an alternative, as an extra-bonus to those who have an interest and are willing to accept the rules of the game (beta-versions, plug-ins to download, ...).
In particular, I would like to pass a personal message to Jim: Jim, you wrote: "Golly, that new capability that lets your page feature 3-D in-your-face images which require special glasses is just soooooo cool!". Jim, you do not need special glasses to view my personal site; you do not even need a special plug-in (at the moment, formats used are: *.HTM, *.GIF and *.JPG, which are pretty common these days - and pretty useful to show photographs), you can use the normal home page instead; only if you want to have a glimpse on the future, you can try the hot-sauced page (by the way, the hot-sauce file is no bigger than 5,067 bytes). You may just as well decide not to visit my personal site, I have nothing to sell, I just do it for the fun of it. It's YOUR CHOICE: on the web, users have the power to decide what they want to see, it's up to YOU to decide.

I have to say that I've found myself disappointed by the negativity about Christian' site that required a new pluggin, HotSauce.
I went there and of course downloaded the plugin to see what it does. I saw this rather ugly conglomeration of hideously-colored-bars.
Well I did the same thing, and while it wasn't perfect, it provided something different to experience than I've seen before. We have to keep in mind that most people use the web for entertainment and offering something new can be fun. After all the pluggin only took a few minutes to download on 28.8 modem (which is becoming the norm).
While I agree a cool interface cannot be a substitute for content, providing an interface that's a fun or at least new experience can be a form of content for people looking to be entertained.
The moral of this is that even if you personally wouldn't design your site in a certain way, we should give some credit to people trying something new.

Really, in response to Christian Guittet, most people are NOT surfing with a high-end computer! I run Netscape 3.0, Win 3.1, on a 486 with a 28.8 modem. I would call this the AVERAGE, not to men ion there are many people with sub-AVERAGE computers out there who want to view your page also.
Anyway, you CAN make your page look great, and I'm sure yours looks just fabulous, but if it has diddle content, what good's it going to do, and if your page looks fabulous and has great content, kudos to you, but what if someone wants the great content, without the fabulous graphics? So, please, for the sake of those with low-end machines, provide a text-only version!
(p.s. Only provide that text-only version if it's feasible...say your site's about graphics ((like mine)) a text-only would be dumb)

Very surprising comment: when visiting your
Ali Page, I was immediately proposed to download a plug-in to download MIDI files; sorry, I don't have it yet and don't have any intention to download it.

As a result of reading Christian Guittet's remarks about new technology and Apple's Project X (HotSauce) I added a Project X section to my site. It took a little more that a couple of hours, but after a few glitches were sorted with the program, not too long and is now up and running. I run Netscape 3 and IE 3 with a 28 Modem and download time is quick. I appreciate Mike Johnson's comments but I also have alternatives of plain text and my site set up for frames or no frames browsers. My real point is that if we all waited for "New" technology to get sorted there wouldn't be any. My site is commercial and people have said it is a bit too advanced for my likely customers who are all "in a hurry",it seems. However I take a pride in trying to do things as well as possible and like to make my site better than the rest.

Congratulations for your X-Space.
I'm glad you like the technology; it may be a little cutting-edge to-day, but I'm pretty sure that it is a preview of what will soon be standard on the web.

Re: LinkExchange Digest #036: Some new ideas on how to attract traffic to your web site using cutting-edge technology,
Christan this is a fine idea. However, as a web sight designer we have found that new technology might be a way of generating interest in your site, but that interest is quickly lost due to "load" time.
The average user on the internet today is running Netscape 3.0 at 14.4/28.8. I find that anything that takes longer than 30 seconds to load, I am usually back to the search engine I came from or off that page. It definately doesn't go into my bookmarks. Though new technology is fantastic (ie:Active X) it is also just that-- NEW technology. With this come problems and time consuming fixes. Not everyone's browser is compatible and they also find themselves waiting up to 30 minutes to download "plug-in " just so they can view this "fancy" graphic interface.
I do agree that these things are great and are definately the "future" of the internet. However if generating traffic to your site is what you seek, I highly recommend another route for the next two years.

About the comments:
For your information: The hot-sauce file is no bigger than 5,067 bytes. It will not take more than 3-4 seconds, even at 14.4 (which is what I use). By the way,
your own home page is 37 kbytes large, and would optimally take 20 seconds to load at 14.4.

I read your post and was wondering if I could have a bit more information about "getting the plugin" for my 3D tour of your site. I'm a bit skittish about just downloading a plugin without understanding its size, or what other specs it might require. Maybe you could put that information on your opening page, to sort of ease us into the download process. I'm not worried about security or anything like that, but I crashed my IE browser (which I no longer use) and actually did quite a bit of damage to my hard drive entering a page that was running a poorly written java script, so I'm very particular about what I jump into, and/or download.
I like your idea though, and would like to know more about it for my own site.
Thanks for bringing it to the group's attention and have a good week.

I saw your letter in Link Exchange so I came to visit your page. First I had to download and install yet another plugin! Then I had to exit Netscape, install the plugin, and reload Netscape. Then I went to your page again. I found some colored strips after much button pushing on little white dots. The strips had words on them, mostly too small to read. I found by accident that I could click on one and push some dots and it would grow big enough to read. But that's it. I couldn't make them do anything, like show me pictures, or tell me stories. How is this supposed to work?
Best, Lois

I'm a journalism student, specializing in electronic media. Here are my impressions of your site:

  1. The first page could be a little more descriptive, I wasn't sure what the site was about or where the links would take me. (Most of us don't bother to look at the page title.)
  2. Include graphics only where necessary. Text as graphics should be avoided. The page with new technology doesn't need the photos since the links go to pages with photos of each item. I won't sit and wait for them to load. I clicked on one of your photo , and liked that you made it an interlaced gif and set the height/width. That helps a lot.
  3. I really like the background with the photographs, but the water spots make the text difficult to read, and the black background is a no-no.
  4. I get a "transfer interrupted" error each time I go to a page in your site, then the page loads.
  5. I would suggest a visit to http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com. I don't think your pages "suck", but this site contains very good information. Mr. Flanders gives excellent examples of what not to do. These are the principles taught to journalism students.
  6. I really like the navigation bar (strip of film)!
Overall, your site is informative and well-designed. The html resources page is nice, and is now bookmarked for my future reference!

I couldn't view your page because I didn't have the hotsauce plugin, a d I magine this is a problem with most other people. The problem with this cutting edge technology is that is hard for the average person to program it into their personal web page.
If you know of any stuff other than hotsauce that is cutting edge and could bring more viewers to my web site, could you please let me know.
thanks.

Re: LinkExchange Digest #036: For instance, implement a cutting-edge technology. This can be quite easy, even within the reach of an individual for his home page. You only need to keep an eye on emerging technologies, and wonder how you co ld put them into practice.
Yes, the cutting-edge technology can all be very interesting and fascinating, but you have to decide which type of users/viewers you want to view your site. Many people still have access to the WWW via a 14.4 modem, which isn't very fast. There's also the important issue of preserving bandwidth. As more and more users are logging on all the time the WWW lags more and more.
The most important question to ask yourself before throwing yourself at any new technology is; does it help me distribute my content? It's all about communication. Does this funny and savvy new technology increase or decrease the signal-to-noise ratio of y message?
Many new technologies developed for the WWW are quite hardware demanding. You often need a high performance machine, a bunchload of memory circuits and, most importantly perhaps, a fast connection. Even though prices have gone down on hardware many people lack any of all of the above.
New technology should, I think, not be used just because it's new and cool. If the technology helps you communicating your message, by all means use it, if it doesn't, leave it for the time being.
Many of the new technologies emerging today is part of the Internet of tomorrow, with all that belongs to the future such as high bandwidth etc. You don't always have to be first. Create content suitable for the present WWW, plan for the future, wait. Whe the time is right, launch.
Well, that's just some words from a guy who has stopped loading one too many interesting sites because they were too slow.

I am just curious why the CTR of virtually the same banner jumped from ~10:1 to 20:1.
Colors are the same, message is the same, was it more because it may not have been displayed in the right places?
Regards

About the comments:
Sorry, I have no explanation to these variations: the CTR of my banner has indeed increased from 8.5:1 to 20.6:1, without any change what-so-ever. Assuming that the statistics provided by the Internet Link Exchange are reliable, these CTR luctuations might just be related to the limited number of times my pages have been advertised so far, and it will just be interesting to see around which value the CTR will stabilize.
Please heck again later

There is no difficulty at all: just use any software - even the simplest - to design it and then, convert it to a GIF format - there are even plenty of freeware to do that.
