What a delight, that so many are discovering and giving pride and respect to their Jewish origins, even if not returning to the faith, Who knows how many Jews there really are? The Pathan in Afghanistan are some 16,000,000 of Jewish extraction, the Kashmiris in India, Lemba, Ghana, Senega, Burmese B'nai Menashe for a taste of the more exotic. Crypto Jews in U.S. West, Mexico, Brazil, etc., millions! It was once synonymous with "Jewish" to say you were "Portugese". How many Portugese or Spanish are pura de sangre? Before the inquisition, the most educated, the most regal were Jews. Even the Spanish royal family, was not "pura de sangre". It was rumored that Ferdinand's grandmother was Jewish! And other secret Jews- the Dolmeh of Greece and Turkey, outward Moslems, secret Jews. Thank G-D people are now proud rather than ashamed of their Jewish ancestors in many places. A faith that survived in beliefs, and words, and deeds, not cold stone buildings and artifacts, while other great civilisations went into decline. Well- enough, basta! Do many of them claim to have Jewish roots? | Comments: There are abundant clues that substantiate Sephardic Jewish ancestry in my family but unlike yourself, I have not been able to prove it as yet. All the last names in my family tree are Sephardic: Pimentel, Furtado, Velho, Tavares, Pereira, Medeiros and Aguiar. Of all these names, Pereira and Pimentel are undoubtedly the most Jewish. I am that certain conversion from Judaism to Christianity took p ace in my family shortly after the Inquisition. My paternal grandmother's maiden name was "Velho" and apparently her family was one of the wealthiest on the island of São Miguel where my family is from. My maternal great grandmother "Pereira" came from an affluent background as well. It is a known fact that the Azorean Jews controlled and owned most of the land and the majority of the businesses. They controlled the import and export industries as well, ot to mention the fact that they were for the most part teachers, bankers, doctors etc. Sadly, intermarriage between the Catholics and the Jews inevitibly led to the total eradication of Jewish customs and traditions. However, traces of Judaism still exis in some Azorean families in terms of a few rituals that are observed but most have no clue of the Jewish origin of those practices. One such example is the lighting of candles on Friday night. I have discussed what I have uncovered so far with my father and he is convinced now more than ever that we do in fact have Jewish ancestry. I feel a special kinship with all things Jewish and I always have. Please e-mail me with your feedback as I am very interested in what you might have to say about what I've shared with you. I am especially interested as I have Jewish background. I am interested in trying to find out what the Jewish name CARDOZO was prior to the Spanish Inquisition. My grandmother was a Sephardic Jew and her middle name was Nunez/s and her last name was Cardozo. I understand they named all the children with the same middle name "NUNEZ" to keep the Cardozo lines seperate as this was a very common name after the Inquisition. Once checking my mother's maiden name - Kapon/Capon - I found and entry by a brazilian government entity indicating that there was a tribe of indians which called hemselves descendends of Kapon - "he who came from the sky" - is it possible that one of the anusim, ventured in the amazon jungle, and was seen as a god by this tribe?
