Triton, Trumpeter of the Sea
Triton, the son of Poseidon
and Amphitrite was a merman, his upper half was human with blue
eyes and green hair, his lower half that of a dolphin with scales.
Triton was the brother of Albion, Charybdis, Benthesicyme and
Rhode and was the father of Pallas. When the gods sent a giant
flood to punish mankind Triton ordered the waters to retreat by
blowing on his conche shell, thus he is remembered as the
trumperter of the Gods.
The image of Triton blowing
his horn was a favorite of Baroque and Renaissance fountains.
