Teiresias was
a famous prophet of Thebes. He accidentally came across Athena
while she was bathing, so she blinded him. After his mother's
pleading Athena gave him the gift of prophecy to compensate for
his blindness. Among his prophecies were a warning to Pentheus to
recognize and honor Dionysus when he first appeared in Thebes, a
prediction of the greatness of Hercules and he revealed to
Oedipus that Oedipus had unknowingly murdered his own father.
When Odysseus was trying to make his way home after the Trojan War, had was told by the enchantress Circe that he would never return safely without consulting Teiresias, so he journeyed to the far western edge of the earth and crossed the great river that flows around it. Entering Hades, he dug a pit and filled it with sacrificial blood to summon the ghosts of the dead. Teiresias was among them, and he gave the needed advice.
