Gaia, also known as Ge or Gaea, was the personification of the Earth. According to Hesiod, she was born of Chaos, she both mothered and married Uranus. Gaia gave birth to Pontus (the sea), and together with Uranus Ourea (the mountains) and shape of the earth, as well as the Titans, Cyclopes and the Hecantoncheires, or hundred-handed giants.
After Gaia's youngest child, Cronus, overthrew Uranus, by castrating him, she took the blood that spilled on her and gave birth to the Giants and the Furies, whom she charged with persecuting the wicked. Gaia also later bore Typhon, with her brother Tartarus.
Homer placed Gaia at the swearings of oaths as a witness, since she saw all that took place on the Earth. Gaia's children were often the protectors of Oracles and often the enemies of the gods. Gaia is probably the oldest goddess in the Greek pantheon, worshipped long before religion took place as a formal practice as an all encumpassing Mother Goddess.
