Shrinking Banshee Presents:
The Banshees
The Banshees, or bean-sidhe, are the Irish messengers of death, they find a place in the Olympians section thanks to Xena and Gabrielle's journey into Gaul. The Banshee's closest Greek counterpart is Death herself. Prominent Irish families were often blessed, or cursed, with personal Banshee's, possibly ancestors of the family, that would herald a death by singing lamentful tunes the night before a loved one was to be taken.
The banshee usually appears as either a young woman, a stately matron or an old hag. Representing the three sides of the Celtic goddess of war and death, Badhbh, Macha and Mor-Rioghain. She usually wears either a grey, hooded cloak or the winding sheet or grave robe of the unshriven dead. She may also appear as a washer-woman, or bean-nighe , and is seen apparently washing the blood stained clothes of those who are about to die.
