Shrinking Banshee Presents:

Bacchus, God of Wine

Bacchus, the son of Zeus and Semele, was originally a Pre-Greek god of wine. He was also called Dionysus and Liber by the Romans. While Dionysus became one of the most important of the Greek Gods, Bacchus is usually shown as a slightly ridiculous drunk. Bacchus, also called Iacchus at the Athenian Festivals, was married to Ariadne, the daughter of Minos and Pasiphae, and had many children. The author Milton wrote that Bacchus was father to Comus, by Circe, or Marica. The followers of Bacchus were called Bacchae, or Bacchants.

For more information see the Dionysus page.
