Shrinking Banshee Presents:

Amphitrite, The Goddess of the Sea

Amphitrite was one of the fifity Nereids, The daughters of Nereus and Doris, or Oceanus and Tethys. Mythology tells us that Poseidon fell in love with Amphitrite after watching her dance on the Island of Naxos. She resisted his advances by fleeing to Atlas, who protected her. Poseidon sent all the creatures of the sea to look for her, and at last the dolphin found her. The dolphin was so elequent in his pleading of Poseidon's cause that Amphitrite agreed to marry him. The triumph of Amphitrite riding in a dolphin-drawn carriage is frequent theme in Roman tile mosaics. Also, the Dolphin constellation was placed in the sky by the gods in her honor.

Amphitrite was the mother of Albion, Benthesicyme, Charbydis, Rhode, Triton and many others.
