Shrinking Banshee Presents:
Amphipolis
Amphipolis
was founded in 437/438 BC by the Athenians as a strategic holding
in the Strymon Vale. This area was rich in farmlands and near the
Pangaion gold mines. The people of Amphipolis worshipped Artemis
Tauroplis mainly, but there is also evidence of sanctuaries
dedicated to Pythian Apollo, Aphrodite and Heracles. Later in
amphipolis' history there was also worship of the Egyptian
Deities and Cybele and Attis. Archaelogists have also uncovered a
large gymnasium in Amphipolis, along with evidence that it was
the seat of the Royal Mint in Macedonian times.
Amphipolis declared independence from Athens in 442 BC, and stayed independent until its incorporation into Macedonia in 357 BC, when it was declared the capital of Macedonia Prima.
