The swimmer’s commitment to Surfside Swim Team means swimming three to five times per week, year-round, and participating in swim meets in which the team participates.
Each swimmer is responsible for the following:
3 Call the Surfside team information line (310-372-9779) every Monday afternoon.
3 Work out three to five times every week.
3 Make an honest effort to improve both swimming technique and endurance.
3 Compete in swim meets, particularly if recommended by your coach.
3 Arrive at workouts on time with all your equipment (practice suit, goggles, towel, kick boards, buoys, and fins).
3 Follow your coach’s directions during meets and workouts.
3 Complete paperwork and forms necessary for meets and submit before meets.
3 Get to meets in time for pre-meet warm-ups (usually one hour before start time).
3 Keep locker rooms clean; turn off showers. No food in locker rooms.
3 Wear team suit at meets and practice suits for workouts.
3 Participate in Surfside Swim Team functions.
3 Do not bring valuables to the pool. Surfside Swim Team is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
3 Lend a hand! Set up and take out lane lines and pool covers, clean up pool area.
3 If you miss a workout, check for any notices or information you may have missed.
3 Check your folder in the members’ files.
3 Communicate with your coach! Ask for help to become a stronger swimmer. If you do not understand, ask your coach to explain.
3 Keep track of your times. You should keep separate records for USAS and SCAA. Each meet entry requests the swimmer’s best times for events. If you do not have a time from another meet, enter "NT" (No Time). It is important to fill in a time if you have one from a prior meet. If you do not, you will compete with other swimmers who do not have previous times and may not be of the same ability level as you, and you may not be eligible for ribbons or trophies.
Goggles
All swimmers must have goggles. Younger swimmers who are not used to goggles often find them awkward at first. However, the pools are chemically treated to keep them sanitary and exposing your eyes without protection during workout can cause redness and pain.
Kick Boards
All swimmers should have their own kick boards and bring them to every workout.
Fins
All swimmers should have fins. Please purchase competitive swimmer fins rather than boogie board fins--swimmer’s fins are specifically designed to work the legs.
Pull Buoys
All swimmers should have their own pull buoys.
Swim Caps
These are optional but highly recommended for anyone with long hair. Caps keep hair out of your face when you are swimming, reduce chemical damage to the hair, and decrease drag in the water.
Equipment may be found at various sports supplies stores. Be sure to mark all equipment with the swimmer’s name in permanent marker so that lost equipment can be returned to the swimmer.
