Surfside Coaching Staff


Surfside enjoys the services of five skilled coaches who share the team's dedication to swimming and helping youth strive for the best.

Head Coach, John York, is a former Surfside swimmer who brings many years of swimming experience to the team. John is best known for his rough water achievements, which include swimming the Catalina Channel and the English Channel. He has also worked and traveled with USA national teams, participating in international swim competitions. John directs Surfside's training program and coaches the Senior group at Surfside.

Assistant Coach, Andrea Koze, coaches Senior and A group swimmers at the Redondo High practice pool on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Andrea is also a high school water polo and swim coach, working on her teaching credential in science.

Assistant Coach, Frank Wattles, is another former Surfside swimmer with standing Southern California Swimming records. Frank continues to train for competition at the Masters level. Frank coaches A level swimmers at Surfside.

Assistant Coach, Pam Berry, is an experienced synchronized swimmer, and parent of two current Surfside swimmers. Pam coaches B level swimmers at Surfside.

Assistant Coach, Cynthia Tournat, is a kindergarten teacher and Masters level swimmer. Cynthia coaches beginning C swimmers at Surfside.

All Surfside coaches participate fully in the team's training program and in competitions entered by team swimmers. Their combined skills enhance members' experience and training with the team.
