We would like to introduce the newest
member of the E-Wing News Team. "J.Phil" from
Texas, who will be writing a monthly Tech Topic article.
J.Phil's article will be both available in text and on
his own webpage. Please join us in welcomeing J.Phil to
E-Wing News.

I have been riding motocycles since I was
9 years old. I
started out on a "WHIZZER" (maybe some of you
remember?) which was a motroizing kit for a bicycle. A
friend and I "souped" it up and took it out for
a "run". Managed to get 68 mi/hr out of it.
Thought it was going to fall/shake apart. Not too smart,
I think (now). Then I moved UP to a "Cushman
Scooter" WOW. Then next was a "Powell".
Anyway......in the intervening 54 years I
have all kinds.....Indians, Harleys, Aerial square four (
a popular "police bike" at the time), AJS,
Triumph, BMW, Hondas, etc. etc. I now have a Honda
GL1500......The best bike I have ever owned!!!!!!
I joined GWRRA in 1988 (061728) and when our GWRRA
chapter (Texas
"1"Chapter "X") was organized in
1989 I started writing the TechTopic articles
for our news letter.
I'm retired now, ride all I can, especially in the
"Texas Hill Country" where we have a place on
the Frio River called, Sauerkraut Ranch. Also, maintain a
small manufacturing/mail order business called...."SAUERKAUT RANCH".....
which deals with manufacturing/sales of electrical
motorcycle accessories.

David and Lori of E-Wing News asked us to put
together a few words as a kind of wrap up to the riding
season this year. Gosh, when you stop to think of it,
where has the time gone? It seems like just a short time
ago we in Michigan were planning our annual winter event
that we call Wingless Weekend. Well, February came and
went, and now Wingless 1999 is just a collection of
photos and good memories. Then there was the Region
Funshop in the spring of the year. After that, a
whirlwind of Rallies, Wing Ding, Chapter Picnics and
Campouts filled our time. So many things to do in the
Gold Wing Road Riders Association, and so little time in
which to do it in.
The highlight of the summer to us was of course the
Michigan District Rally. This was the first year that we
were the Michigan District Directors, and it was a real
eye opener for us. We really saw how valuable a good
Staff is to run an event of that size. There were so many
little details and tasks that the District Staff and the
Chapter Directors take care of. Without the efforts of
the Members, and the work they do, Michigan couldn't put
on a Rally like we do.
Now the riding season is drawing to a close once again.
For many of us, the next time we ride our motorcycles
will be in a new century. Thanksgiving will be here
before we know it. Our families will be gathering more
often during the coming Holiday Season. There will be
football games on the television and heated discussions
on whether or not the home team should have gone for that
elusive fourth down. The great thing is that no matter
what the final score is, it doesn't affect the love and
closeness our families feel when they get together so
infrequently. We here in the GWRRA of Michigan believe we
each have two kinds of families. Both the one you are
born with and the kind that you create out of the people
that you care for and love. The GWRRA is that kind of
family. To our almost four thousand family members in
Michigan and some eight thousand more scattered
throughout Indiana and Ohio, we wish you the most
Happiest of Holidays. Take care of yourselves and each
other.

I am 29
years old, 6'5" & 170lbs. The extra size sucks.
I ran into a disease called Scoliosis (curvature of the
spine). I got that with my growth spurt, pre-teen through
15 years old. Jan. of 1985 I had spinal fusion. That
night, or through surgery, I grew 2 more inches which
threw off my equilibrium so I had to re-learn to walk
because I was so tall & not used to it. I wore a body
cast for a year. If they straitened me all the way
another 2" I would be 6'7". I sit in my
wheelchair at an even 5'2". This Scoliosis is also a
part of Freidriech's Ataxia. My FA was first
mis-diagnosed as Cerebral Palsy at the age of 9 years
old. I just fell a lot & sometimes tripped when ran.
I walked until the age of 17 or so but by then

Before I
begin this month's newsletter article I must put in a
disclaimer that I am not a dietitian, or medical
professional.
It is a well known fact that most Gold Wingers ride to
eat and/or eat to ride. If anyone wants to know about how
good the food is at any of the local eating
establishments all they need to do is find a Gold Winger
and ask him or her. We definitely know all the good
places to eat.
This is the time of the year when many of us have joined
in fellowship and gone on "color rides" and
have joined in many of the fall festivities that abound
in many of the local
communities. Then at the end of this month is the
beginning of the "holiday season" with
THANKSGIVING. Many of us have a lot to be thankful for.
All of which means food and consumption of food.....

CELL/MOBILE
PHONES FOR EMERGENCIES
Don’t throw away or shelf those
Mobile Or Cell phones you may have just because you are
no longer subscribing to a service such as
“Sprint” etc. Your “phones” are still
active. You can call 911 absolutely FREE from any
where/time or any other number for a charge. The
following is how this works. There is no need to join a
cell phone service and pay extensive monthly fees because
the system works with de-activated phones, ones that are
not subscribed to any service. ......

 WINGING GOOD FOR
YOUR HEALTH
We have a 1994 SE 1500 Goldwing. I've had a heart
transplant in 1997 and my husband I left Delaware Ohio,
and went 6,054 miles to Calf, and back on our Goldwing in
June 1999. We had two
other couples with us. We had a wonderful time and thank
God no problems. There was so much to see and do we
didn't even take time to think about anything. The
weather was great for us. I had to go to the Cleveland
clinic for a check up when we came home. I've been in
rejection for about a year off and on but when I went for
my check up I had NO REJECTION !!!!!! They were so happy
and could not believe I went on our Goldwing that far.
The doctors said they were going to put it into the files
because they have never heard of any transplant person
doing that before. We just wanted everyone to know that a
good long vacation on a Goldwing can do wonders!!!!!

Chapter Z2 - Delaware, Ohio
Bobbi wrote this regarding the picture.
This was the day I came home. June 19,1997. There were
four Wings who met us and we followed them home from the
Cleveland Clinic to Delaware. I didn't know they were
going to be there. It was a big surprise. They were on
the Goldwings, me and my husband were in our car. I was
only transplanted for 19 days. I was also on our Goldwing
in 28 days taking a ride.

Bike
Down
It's Friday afternoon and I should be at
Wings Over the Smokies enjoying the roads, the weather,
and being the proud owner of a bunch of new accessories,
but instead I sit here at home in front of my computer
with a broken foot and a busted up motorcycle. I never
even made it out of Ohio. There were 5 bikes in our group
that headed out about 3pm and wanted to get into Kentucky
on day one. Around 7:30 it was a perfect evening for
riding, I had the tape player cranked up and was thinking
how wonderful it was going to be getting into the hills
and curves, enjoying good roads and wonderful company for
the weekend. I had put almost 2000 miles on the bike and
was really feeling comfortable with it. I was bike 4 and
riding the outside line. We entered a series of 4
curves marked at 25mph. I don't know how fast I was going
as I was just keeping pace with the group. As I entered
the third curve which turns left I leaned into the curve
and here is where I get uncertain as to exactly what
happened. I remember my footpeg making contact with the
pavement ................

KENTUCKY
CHAPTER P RIDE IN
We got
up early in the morning put on all of our leather and
headed for Blue Licks State Park in Kentucky for Chapter
P's Ride-In. We were excited about going because this was
the first opportunity in awhile to attend a Ride-In due
to work and other obligations. Although our ride was
cold, the reception we received when we arrived was far
from that. As we got off our bikes and headed toward the
registration table, the smell of freshly brewed coffee
and donuts greeted us. The women at the table were very
friendly and helpful. We also got to meet Linda Gooding,
the one who sent us the information about the event in
the first place. It is so nice when we get
to meet those of you in person who e-mail us. After
registering, we ran over to get some hot coffee and
donuts. My fingers were so numb from the cold, I could
hardly fix my coffee. But I managed and then we found a
place in the sun to sit. We hung out for awhile watching
all the people coming in on their bikes. They were just
as cold as we were and seemed to make a beeline for the
coffee as well.

Kenny Mullins Memorial Trivia Road Rally, Chardon, Ohio
GWRRA Ohio Chapter Z, would like to thank all the people
who took the time to support our annual trivia run. We
are now calling it the Kenny Mullins Memorial Trivia Road
Rally, in his memory. Kenny was our first Chapter
Director, whom we lost last year. Kenny & Lillian
were Chapter Directors for over ten years. On a cool
cloudy Sunday morning we had a great turnout and just as
the bikes were starting the run, the sun came out and
gave them a cool & sunny ride. There were over 80
motorcyclists from Ohio & Pennsylvania. Be sure and
watch the E-Wing News for next years information on
Chapter Z's Kenny Mullins Memorial Trivia Road Rally, on
the first Sunday in October. Hope to see more old &
new faces.
Hope to see you next year. Thanks everyone.
