BMW M5

More M5 Pics

The M5 began with the idea to build an extraordinary sports car.  At the end of the 70's, the BMW M1 was developed.  In the 80's, BMW turned the M1 concept into a production car for the first time - the M5 was born. Over the years it has evolved and now has 400 horsepower delivered from the newly developed 8-cylinder engine.
Most sports cars and many high-performance cars can be immediately recognized by their unusual design.  I like the M5 not only because of its massive power potential, but also for the way it looks.  The discreet lines reveal that the body was designed for high-performance.  The front, the rear and the underneath of the M5 were all designed for optimum aerodynamics so that the M5 rides down the street in a kind of vacuum known as the Venturi effect. But even that takes place discreetly.
The powerful M motor is the epitome of an engine. V-8 cylinders, 5 litre displacement, 400 hp and maximum revs of 7000/RPM build up phenomenally high torque.  In the 4th gear the M5 accelerates from 50MPH to 75 MPH in just 4.8 seconds.
The basis of the M5 is the 5 Series sedan. The torsional stiffness of the 5 Series body and the low unsprung masses create the necessities for a high-performance vehicle like the M5. Other technical details ensure that the M5 remains under control at all times. For example to handle the enormous acceleration the M5 has a  high-performance brake system. The diameter of the discs is 345 millimeter in the front and 328 millimeters in the back.
