I asked Dale for a "3" when he signed my dash. He shook his head and said "Naah, I'll always be with you, Dale Earnhardt". I looked at him and said "OK". I figured I was just lucky enough to get up to see him and get it signed... So I was satisfied..
That was March 4th, 1999. The signature started fading away after I had put the SS in the shop for some front-end work. I didn't know that my car was left out in the Texas sun for about 1 1/2 weeks. The dealership didn't have the parts in stock. I had a towel over the signature to keep the sun off of it, but I guess that didn't work. The next year, I called all of the radio stations, but Earnhardt was in Talladega giving out tickets to the race, while pulling people over in a Highway Patrol car. He didn't do any signings in Dallas that year. If I would have known that that was my last chance to get it signed, I would have tried to get tickets to the inside of the track and carried my dash around all day, until he signed it again. Funny how things work out some times....... March 13, 2001
There are tons of "I should have done this, I should have done that". I wanted another dash, but the cost was not reasonable. I wanted to seal it with something, but was afraid of it ruining the dash. I wanted him to write it with a real permanent marker, instead of a blue sharpe.... But, oh well... |
