How to clean the sump

To clean the oil sump, first spin the engine to it is ready to fire on cylinder #1, remove the distributor. Use an old distributor shaft, or the proper socket and extension to drive the oil pump shaft. Be sure to weld the socket to the extension to prevent it falling off into the engine. Next, drain the oil pan. Place a pan of mineral spirits under the drain hole. Remove the oil filter, and install a remote oil filter adapter, or fashion an adaptor using a large washer. Use gasket material behind it to seal it, and and drill and tap a hole for a hose fitting. Weld a fitting to a fine thread nut to spin on th retain the adaptor. Hook a hose to either the inner or outer fitting and drop the other end into the pan of spirits. I think the outer fitting is the one you want, to the sump. Use a reversable drill to reverse drive the oil pump, this pumps spirits from the pan, backwards thru the oil pump, and flushes out the sump. I suggest a bit of tranny fluid in the spirits to provide a bit of lube to prevent scoring the oem aluminum pump housings. After a few minutes of this, give it a few to drain. When done, I then pour the spirits in a bucket, place the pan back under. Pour the spirits into the filler cap, and watch to see if anything is washed out of the pan. You may need to do this several times. When done, put in fresh oil, run a 1000 miles or so, and change the oil again.
