Hi Terry, I found your site. To all who read this... Terry is always on his soap box. It is one of the fixtures he has made at work... and he uses it. FYI... I work across the hall from Terry. He's alright, but I would never tell him that.

Great site with lots of great tips!!! Keep it up !!! As for the Firestone issue, I never liked their tires. I've been very satisfied with the Micheline ATX tires I have on my truck. As for buying a new truck...who can afford one at those ridiculous prices. Might as well take the money and build up my old anger. Good luck to ya!!! GRD

On MAP sensor testing. The vacuum numbers you quote need to be corrected downward by ~1" Hg for every thousand feet above sea level. This makes a big difference to people like me that live at 5000' MSL. Not even the Ford manuals mention this. Thank go for EFI...Auto makers never did get that there are roads above sea level. Also on MAP sensors, I have been thinking of making a widget that would jigger the MAP output so that speed-density EFI could be tuned to accomidate improved heads, exhaust, etc. Just tell the computer the air is at higher pressure to compensate for impr ved flow. Do you see any reason this wouldn't work. Oh, yeah, I am an electrical engineer...I CAN do this.

Very nice page. Good to see someone taking it a bit above and beyond. I wish I would have found your article on cleaning the sump a while ago. I had everything set to go but I didn't realize you needed a washer on the oil filter mount, and instead just ho ked the hose to the center tube and went for it. Needless to say, it didn't work and so now I"m just going to pull the engine and replace the pump and the cam bearings. I want good oil flow. Anyway, great page!

I Would like to find out why Ford put the wrong dip stick in the 3.2 ford Ranger??? Then didn't put a recall on them. I Have a 84 Ranger, And have 116946 miles on it and I just found out that Ford has sent jiffey lube a chart that tells them that they put the wrong dip stick in the eng. So I have been puting 6qts oil in at every oil change with filter. So I am upset. So what has this done to my eng????

I'm rwbuilding the A4LD from the 88 Scorpio and found your comments very useful. Why does the manual stress using new pump mounting bolts? Since they thread into the Al casting they certainly can't be "torque to yield". Also I noticed that the retracti n spring for the reverse piston was missing; the tranny had been rebuilt 14000 miles prior to the current failure.

Hi Fordman Got here from Kunz Korner. I own a 1990 X-cab Ranger but love the 1979 full size pick up. Tried to get one here but people are proud of their vehicles no matter how much rust they have. Just finished putting on most of my JBA headers have to go to Midas to have a bolt pressed into the old cat. roke one off. Found out that if you remove the alternator from passenger side the header goes in with no problems. well got to go take it easy greg

I have an 85 Bronco II (2.8 V6, 5-speed, plain vanilla)that I am considering upgrading to a 4.0 and stronger 8.8 axles if I can get some information on what would be involved in doing the conversion. Any comments would be appreciated.

Nice web site. I was helping a neighbor with his ford ranger, 86 2.9L. dies after about an hour, and won't start unless he leaves it sit for about an hour. Otherwise it runs good. Any hints would be a help to him. Not a fuel problem. Thanks, Ray

I worked my first job as a co-op student, after having been a mechanic for four years at Philco-Ford (1972-1974). We had the best electronics company in the world and the six fingered dwarves that run Ford decided they didn't want to be in the electronics business. They shut Philco semiconductor down with customers begging to receive shipments. What a bunch of morons! I tweaked a clock radio for one of the Ford matrons, because they couldn't trust an off the shelf unit to be acceptable. The production was done in Taiwan. The film they showed us (at Philco) of women assembling stereos with rubber hammers (no kidding!) sealed our fate and I never applied for employment at Ford after I graduated. I worked for Bendix Fuel Injection my first job out of college at Troy, Michigan, now part of Siemens. I never interviewed with my friends from Philco, who were moved from PA to MI even though they were paying a premium for Fuel Injection specialists In 1977 I did interview with American Motors and GM-Pontiac and turned down the GM offer for less money to stay with Bendix and get out of the car business. I came to MD and worked with some of the guys who did the first fuel injection work for Bendi and the Ford speed control, which Bendix sold to Ford. It was kinda funny, I worked at Philco to break some of the patents that my friends I later worked with at Bendix had developed. When I joined the Automotive Control group at Philco in 1973 my boss took me around and introduced me to everyone in the department (about 90 people) and told me what foreign car they drove and what I drove. It was very interesting that these guys wouldn't buy their own products, and the management, who got sweetheart lease deals all took either Pintos or Mavericks. The only exception was the old head of dept who got a Lincoln and the PHD technical head ho got a 4WD pickup, somewhat rare at that time, but a great choice. We were working on ABS systems while I was there, but all that was dropped because they kept bending the front suspension. I turned down the GM offer because I saw a prototype of the Chevy Citation series at the factory. I knew it was hosed. They said it would be a perfect car because they were taking four years to develop it. When it came off the line within one week hey finally found that the spare tire couldn't be mounted on the front wheel. The attitude at GM when I interviewed (1977) was that they were bigger than the Federal Goverment and their sh** didn't stink! Luckily, Ford realized in 1979 that 1B$ quarterly losses could destroy the company, like the Edsel almost did, and called in the Quality Managers of their suppliers to save them. They did a 180 turn with a company the size of the Queen Mary and pull d it off. I wish I bought stock in Ford when I got the recommendation in July 1982. It would have been the investment I could make because I hated the company and wouldn't be emotionally tied to it. What really helped save Ford was my pet peave when I was a mechanic. When a Ford came in it was get out every tool and be ready to use it. Ford used the input from some Rhode Island professor and limited the number of unique nuts and bolts to minim ze assembly and repair and inventory. I had an 11/16 wrench that I didn't know was too tight to go over a nut until I bought a Ford. They are not common. I was going nuts trying to get a wrench on a fuel filter when I decided to check my CRAFTSMAN wrench on the part I was trying to in tall. It went on 90 degrees horizontal to the length, but try to stick it on straight to the length, and the endpoints of the open end wouldn't clear. I've been away from the automotive electronics scene so long that I don't even know where to find my connectors to do a diagnosis. I've saved your help and bookmarked your homepage and appreciate the help. Thanks, Hank Klein
