GForce KDW

BF Goodrich, g-Force KDW in 215-50-16. (note these are a one-off tire especially made for the SVT Contour, and are not identical to the g-Force KD’s not presently offered in a 16in diameter. The tread pattern is different than the asymmetrical unidirectional ones they advertise. )

On stock 6 in rims, (molded for the 6.5 inch Contour rim), Tread depth is 10/32, same as the Comp TA’s when new.  Tread width "on the road" is 7.5 in, or half inch wider than the Comp TA’s.  Treadwear 300

Stiffer sidewall, absolutely no rim bulge or flatness at the ground. No clearance problems, on a ‘90AWD. Running Koni, Eibach Road Race springs, lowered about 1 inch front and 1.5 inch in back. Still have about ¾ inches of clearance between the sidewall and the front spring perch. Diameter is the same as worn Comp TA’s, circumference is 77 inches.  Carcass width is 8.5 inches, weight is the same

Stock alignment, Run 34 PSI front 30 PSI rear

Balanced perfectly with little lead, vibration free at all speeds. even on my 100K mile rims. Track absolutely straight.

Impressions: Very good in heavy rain, with 4 radial grooves, I don’t think they would be so good in the snow, as there is no siping at all, just big beefy tread blocks. The stiff sidewalls mean extremely precise steering feel and low slip angle in corners. They feel like you could alter your steering line in a corner with no drama, just feel very very precise. Also, the magazines that tested the SVT commented that they were a better tire than the GS-C’s that did come on the car, and were very resistant to wear in track sessions. Cost $144 at tire rack, and for that I think they are a great high-performance tire at a reasonable cost. And they look great on the car, do not appear pinched at all, looks like they are a stock fitment, just a hint wider from the rear. The tread pattern makes a statement with those large blocks.

BFGoodrich R1 very good tire for our car because we have no camber adjustment

in front and the assymmetric design helps us with "virtual camber". No

longer available

Dunlop SP8000 Size: 225/50/16 on 7 1/2" wheels.

Ran with Yoko AVS on the back. The car had major over-steer. They definitely have a lot more grip than the Yoko AVS, hence the car wanting to swap ends.

The Yoko's are old and tired (pun intended!), so maybe the comparison isn't fair.

General XP2000 Car: DSM

Size: 225/50/16 on stock 6" steel wheels, didn't fit well.

The best wet tires I have ever owned

shaved to 3/32.

Lap times at Shannonville were only about 2 seconds difference between full wet and dry. I put this down to the "roll over" I could feel in the dry due to the narrow rims. I was astounded the first time I had them on the track in the wet. I kept pushing a little harder each lap looking for the edge, and they just kept sticking. When I did reach the limit, they were very progressive, and predictable. A great tire!

Features you like about the tire: Very sticky! Wears very evenly (on my car), no need to swap tire inside-out

Pirelli Winter 210 Performance Size: 205/55/16 on stock 6" steel wheels.

They are excellent in the snow and ice, and better than a lot of summer tires in the dry. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for snow tires.

The only problem is I think they are no longer in production. Based on my experience with them, my next snow tires will be from Pirelli as well.

Toyo (no model specified) Good compromise for an autox/street tire but not the choice of top autoxers. these will last longer and you don't have to change your

tires.....but they won't be as sticky on course.

Wheel Information 16X8 wheels with a 37mm offset. This would allow you to run 245/45/16 race rubber and still

keep the speedo accurate to within about 5%.

I was close to this setup with my car (93 AWD) I bought a set of 16X8 3G RX7 wheels and had some spacers made to move everything out to about 37 mm. This required about a 1/2" hubcentric spacer that I designed and had made at a

local machine shop. This moved the wheel out too far so I figured that I would replace the lug studs with longer studs. At the time when I was putting this together I figured that getting the longer lug studs would be easy. Unfortunately they are NOT easy to find.

So, at the present time I am using the RX7 wheels with 3/8 in flat spacers and 225/50-16 R1's (old style, not G-force). This works ok but I am REALLY close to my GAB struts in the front.

Yokohama A008 RX7 with 50 aspect ratio, on Compomotive wheels.

They were probably the best dry tires I have ever owned, for all

out performance. They did just about everything extremely well in the dry. Good turn in, very progressive, quick transitions and fantastic ultimate grip. In the wet they were not great, but not near as bad as everyone expects, based on the tread pattern. They were definitely driveable in the wet, but not high performance.

Yokohama AVS Plus4 Size: 225/50/16 on 7 1/2" wheels

I was expecting a lot based on my A008 experience, but I am sorry to say I was disappointed. They were not even close to the A008's in any measure, except the wet. They were better that the A008 in the wet. In the dry, they seemed to have fairly soft side walls, as the turn in was not particularly crisp. Ultimate adhesion was good, but nothing to rave about, especially considering the price. Don't misunderstand my comments, they were definitely good tires, just not as good as they were advertised to be, again, especially when you factored in the price.
