Hi Volks, glad to see you have got this far in my site. Thanks for sticking with it! On this page I hope to bring you a selection of information and stories about my favourite VW shows in the U.K. You never know I may even get to go to a couple abroad and write about my exploits in strange and distant lands!
Listed here are the shows that I have/will have detailed on this page.
Well, it lived up to its name this year. Bug Freeze was
We met up with a friend from Bradford University, Steve Brown and chatted about VWs and life in general. We also met up with a guy from Leeds called Nick Ball who is also a member of Edubs and he was showing his car at Bug Freeze.
One for the buffers this one. The annual event organised by Leicester and Warwickshire VW OC was hald, funnily enough at Stanford Hall, right at the end of the M6. Just follow the signs....all well and good if someone hadn't turned the lasty one round, I always miss that right turn! What a buzz parking in a field of VWs in my very own VW. This was one of the first places I found it difficult to find my car in the car park!!! I don't usually have that kind of difficulty.
On display was a huge range of split and oval windowed beetles. The Split Screen Van Club put on their usual huge display of fine vans. They were double parked all the way along the river bank. There was also a fine display of Karmann Ghias, VW-Porsche 914s, Karmann Cabrio Bugs and any other VW you care to mention. Also there were Club GTI and the Corrado Club, some gorgeous looking cars there.
Although the weather was a little nippy and the sheep droppings a little too prominent an excellent day was had at an excellent event. It must have been good as we were one of the last cars out of the car park.
What an excellent weekend. We spent the weekend camped at Sunnyside surrounded by boy racers and their Escort vans! A top time was had this weekend cruising round Cornwall in my bug. It was the last weekend of fun in the sun (!) before I took my bug off the road for it's restoration. For info on that you need to see this page.
The first official meet up of Edubs internet club. Club camping was organised by yours truly and a grand weekend was had. For the full report go to Dale's Website
We only went to this one for the day. This is a really busy show where the toilets fill up rapidly, the litter sprinkles the site and everyone seems to be on something as well as the usual petrol vapours! It is an excellent show from Beetle standards and the VWDRC (Drag Racing Club) put on a hell of a show down on the track. This show is always worth going to for the day at least.
To attend this show I stayed with a friend who lives in Rochdale. We were meant to be leaving at about 9 am to get to the show so we didn't miss much but owing to a rather heavy night in Manchester we didn't leave till gone midday as we were still worse for wear and didn't fancy travelling! We arrived at the show about 1 o'clock and there was still a fair bit of stuff there. A fair few traders and some rather nice bugs and busses.
This was our first time at the Slough Swapmeet. We left Harlow at 8:30 a.m. and headed round the M25 for Slough. As we approached the Leisure Centre it got easier to find as there were more and more Beetles and Campers heading in the same direction. We parked up in the overflow car park adn we spotted Rosey's Beetle. We haeded into the Leisure Centre and paid our 2 quid entry. The Leisure Centre was fairly busy, lots of traders and stalls selling bits and pieces of Type 1s, 2s and 3s. I was tempted by the wheels that Jon Abbott had for sale on his JAVA stand. Unfortunately I didn't have the necessary readies and had to give them a miss. I also drew a blank on a '74 owners manual and a wind deflector for my sunroof.
We bumped into Dale and Rosey from edubs and had a good chat. We also saw Damon's rather nice speedster.
I walked away with a few magazines and an aerial for my car. Not a very productive trip from that front but an enjoyable morning all the same.
After lunch we popped over to Wizard Roadsters and checked out what they had on offer but nothing took my fancy so all in all it was a fairly cheap day.....always good in my book.
Many hours of organisation had gone into this show as it was to be the first official edubs stand at a show. I had organised free tickets for volks who were going to show their cars and those of us on the stand. Steve Brown sorted out a gazeebo and signs for the diaply so things were looking good. Helen and I left Harlow at 6 am to try and get there for 8. It was a tad of an early start but worth it as we hit no traffic round the dreaded M25 and arrived at 7.30am. We met up with Steve who had camped over night with Phil Nuttall from Manchester way and we set up the stand. Brisk business was done all day and there were some gorgeous cars around. We met LOADS of edubs members during the weekend and at one time there were 15 for a photo call. For the actual photo see the Edubs website (under 'Members')
