EK 'Special' Decal

The EK!

The ad in the paperA few years ago I bought this beautiful one-owner 1961 EK Holden 'Special' sedan. I couldn't believe my eyes when I read the ad in the newspaper, it all sounded just too good to be true. The ad said that the car was a one-owner, with only 112,000 miles on the clock. I called up the seller and this seemed to confirm it as truth, so I went around for a look-see.

I met the owner, a bright and able-bodied 91 year old pensioner called Cec who had owned the car since new, but had recently given up driving. As a 55 year old he had bought the car in 1961 from Hunts at Lakemba in Sydney. Cec told me that he'd originally wanted a black 1961 Holden, but in those years black had gone out of vogue in favour of 'pastel' colours. He tried for a dark gunmetal grey but that was in short supply so he finally settled on blue. The car had been serviced regularly by Cec and always kept in the garage. It was never polished, but always washed.

I took it for a test drive and immediately knew that I needed this car! The whole thing drove like a new car, the front-end was rock-solid and the engine silky smooth. Gear changes were all solid and true, clutch was perfect, brakes firm. Underneath the car is spotless. The engine also is quite clean, with the original 138 c.i. (2250cc) "grey" engine looking quite proud and proper. But the thing that blew me away was the interior. Cec had really taken care of it. The 'Elascofab' vinyl seats are in perfect condition.

Here's some pictures I took just after I bought it.

As you can see in these photos the interior is beautiful. Unfortunately the original floor mats were perished and split, so I put a moulded carpet in. Also, the paint's pretty faded; I've since cut and polished it back - the car had never been polished (only washed) so there is plenty of paint on it.

The engine bay (below) was pretty clean, but I still managed to remove some pretty hard, old grease. As is to be expected the water pump was shot and I also had to replace the radiator core (you can see the rust colour in the overflow pipe on the radiator). It also needed a new rocker cover gasket, there was a small oil leak from the harmonic balancer, and there was two engine-mount bolts missing. All now pretty much fixed.
