Want to make it go faster?
Here's how:

Don't try this at home! I expect you are already aware that modyfying the NSR or any other 125cc bike is illegal so I'll just get straigth to the point. There is one thing though, this tends to a bit expensive, very expensive.

The exhaust system:RECOMMENDED

Changing the whole exhaust system and the silencer is the easiest way of increasing the power output of this bike. Even if you do own a unrestricted bike this will always add a few extra ponies and save a few kilos. Depends of course on what make it is, if the bike's restricted it should develop around 22 hp at the rear wheel. Arrow offers most power closely followed by Gianelli at a 20% lower price. Top speed is said to be around 155-160 km/h.
*Best value for money

The electronics:

Changing the ignition system is very expensive, fortunately I'm not quite sure whether this is necessary on others than the latest '99 model. If you do happen do own the '99 model you should know that after the exhaust sytem, this is where the NSR is most restricted. The two eletronic units which need to be replaced are the CDI unit and the RC-unit (exhaust level adjuster), when fitting a more powerful cylinder, replacing these two is very important in order to prevent the new cylinder from overheating.

Increasing displacement/changing cylinder:

The cylinder of the NSR125 is restricted and so it ought to replaced with the Italian full power one which incidently happens to be very cheap. If you wish to increase the displacement, forget it, the cylinder can't be rebored so the only alternative is to get hold of a bigger one. Malossi, Eurocilinder and Pollini all make bigger cylinders for the NSR. Mind you, in order to prevent overheating the new cylinder, the exhaust level adjuster ought to be replaced with the unrestricted type. Read text above concerning the electronics.

  • Polini produce a 160cc cylinder with an extra exhaust valve which somehow increases the power at lower revs. Combined with a Gianelli exhaust system top speed is said to be 187 km/h and the maximum amount of horsepower availible is 34hp. Redlines at 11900 rpm!
  • Malossi have a 185cc cylinder, probably very good
  • Eurocilindro have a 185cc cylinder priced very reasonable, somehow though, it didn't fit on my bike.
