Festivities commenced at 6PM. Paulie, Rez & Ren Fan Extraordinaire, beat me to Botanica, but mistook me for Sean. I sat down in back with Paulie et sa petite amie and we exchanged greetings. Paulie gave me a Rez video he had promised me 2 years earlier, but since I never sent him the tape I had promised him, I was slightly embarassed. Paulie was gracious, to his credit. On a hunch, I went to the front door to see if Renaldo was milling about East Houston (pronounced "HOW-stun") Street, trying to find the poorly identified below-street-level bar at which we were to meet. By Providence, Brian was arriving to the general vicinity at the exact time I stepped out the door. After warm greetings, I led him into the dark confines within. In spite of his distaste for the drink and the drinkers, Paulie indulged Brian with a Bud. After that, I set Renaldo straight with the superior Pale Ale from Brooklyn, America's favorite borough. More friends arrived and drowned Brian in wine, adulation and flashbulbs. Paulie got Renaldo to sign each piece of Renaldo hardware and swimwear in his collection. Renaldo regaled us with tales of the creation and development of Renaldo and The Loaf, and Paulie told us about how he shook Homer's hand, with his own nearly frostbitten one.
Later, after the party had subsided, Brian, Paulie, Lissa and I went to Nice Guy Eddie's for a late dinner. On the way to the subway, Brian and I decided to stop for a nightcap at the smokey Mars Bar, where we discussed Captain Beefheart and possible collaborations. Having properly anesthetized ourselves, we repaired to separate cabs and his birthday was done.
