X-Ray Tube

X-Ray Tube:

The X-ray tube is located at the bottom of the photograph. The large console houses the current and voltage controls as well as the flow detectors for the cooling water.

The Varian/Eimac X-ray tube generates X-rays with an energy range of ~0 to 70 keV. The greatest X-ray intensity is in the roughly 15 to 20 keV range. Aluminum and beryllium filters are used to attenuate the low energy X-rays. A current as high as 40 mA can be used. With this current, we can achieve doses up to ~5 MRads/hour for samples situated in our Dewar.
