THE EMPTY HOUSE

It was a dark and stormy night. Jay and Bianca walked quickly down the desrted road with thier jackets over thier heads in an ill attempt to keep dry.

"I told you to stop and get gas!" Bianca exclaimed. "We're stuck out here lost with no money, no ride and nowhere to go!"

Noting that she was obviously tempered, Jay remained silent. Was it his fault the car broke down in the middle of a deserted road leaving them stranded in an unknown area? Was it his fault that they had nowhere to go, nothing to eat and noone around to help? Even though Bianca had insisted on stopping for gas at the last rest stop he had refused, not wanting to stop if it wasn't absolutely necessary. It was necessary now.

"We have enough to get us to the cabin tonight. We'll stop for gas later." he'd said.

Much later, he thought now as they came to an abrupt hault at a dead end.

"What do we going to do now genius?" Bianca asked.

Staring into the dark woods Jay sighed. They could go back and sit in the car, he thought, but then he'd never hear the end of it from Biancas mouth. The best thing to do is to just...

"Well?!" Bianca shouted, interupting his thoughts. Obviously tempered, Bianca repeated her question.

"We keep going." he answered.

"What is this place?" Bianca asked obviously disgusted with the old worn down house.

"Let's find out." Jay said.

They hesitantly walked inside and saw that the place was in terrible condition. Everything seemed to be encrusted in dirt. There was broken furniture everywhere, the walls were cracked, some of the floor boards were loose, and the only light coming into the house was from the occasional lightning flash from the storm that seeped through the boarded windows.

"I guess it's safe to say nobody lives here." Jay said jokingly.

They strenuously walked through the rooms one by one, trying not to trip on anything. They occasionally bumped into each other and walked into walls since they could barely see. They decided to take a look around upstairs and nearly broke thier necks trying to climb the steps. When they got to the top they both stopped. Looking to the left and then the right they made a decision.

"Which way do we go first?" Bianca asked clutching to Jays side.

"This way." he said heading down the left corrider.

They walked carefully down the long hallway making sure to keep close until they came to a door at the end of the hall. Jay grabbed the knob and turned it slowly, pushing the door open. They walked into the dark room together holding thier hands out in front of them so as to make sure they didn't walk into anything.

"Wait, I think I found a candle." Jay said.

"Where?" Bianca asked, sounding slightly relieved at the thought of having some light.

"Here."

"Where is here?"

"Over here! You got a match?"

"Yes."

"Well, give it to me."

"Where are you?"

"Right here!"

"Where?!"

"Right heugh!...ugh!...."

"Jay, what's wrong with you? Stop playing around. Where are you?" Bianca asked getting frustrated. "Stop mumbling."

Bianca walked slowly to the corner of the room where she heard his voice last and bumped into a dresser. She felt the contents on top and was grateful when she felt a candle. She pulled a lighter from her coat pocket and lit the candle. She then saw numerous candles around the room which she began to light one by one until the room was brightly lit. Putting her lighter back into her pocket she looked around the room. Jay was nowhere in sight. Bianca walked over to the door and looked out into the hallway.

"Stop playing around Jay, I'm not in the mood!" she shouted down the long hall. When she heard no response she went back into the room and closed the door. "You can play around all you want Jay, but I'm tired." she said to the room aloud.

Looking around now she saw that she was in a bedroom. A neat one at that. There was a huge bed in the center with sheets that looked like they'd just been changed, a couch in the far left corner, two dressers on either sides of the room with a mirror over the right side dresser. She took off her jacket and tossed it onto the couch. She walked over to the bed and began to take off her shoes when she jumped at sudden loud knock on the door. Smiling to herself she got up and walked over to the door.

"Ha ha Jay. Very funny." She said as she opened the door, but was shocked into silence when there before her stood the most gruesome sight she had ever seen. There a tall figure stood with a ghostly pallor looking back at her. The figure was garbed in torn shabby clothes and had blood dripping from it's hands. Bianca almost fainted as she looked down at his hands and saw Jays lifeless body being dragged by the neck and covered in blood.

"Aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"

Slamming the door shut Bianca ran to the couch where she grabbed her jacket and quickly threw it on. Looking around she noticed the room had no windows.

"Ok Bianca, think, think, think!" she said to herself frantically looking around for a way to escape.

She then walked over to the dresser where she picked up a candle stick. Blowing out the candle and throwing it aside she walked to the door. Taking a deep breath she raised the candle stick and opened the door. To her surprise and somewhat relief, the lurid figure was no longer standing there. Picking up another candle off the dresser and holding it out in front of her for light Bianca walked cautiously out of the room. Still holding the candlestick up she slowly walked down the hall, watching every shadow and listening for every sound besides her own footsteps. It seemed like forever before she reached the staircase, and she was careful not to trip as she made her way down. When she did she held her breath, terrified that if she made a sound whatever took Jay would take her too. Slowly, she walked through the room until she came to the door in which she entered the house. She gripped the doorknob and felt a wave of relief rush over her until she heard it....

"Bianca...."

Motionless Bianca stood there frightened still, and then it came again.

"Bianca....help...."

Not sure what to do she slowly turned holding out the candle in front of her.

"Bianca, help me...."

"J..Jay? Jay, is that you?" Bianca whispered. The voice was so faint she could barely hear it.

"Help me Bianca....help...."

Forcing herself to move Bianca walked slowly towards the faint whisper, trying to keep herself from turning around and running out of the house. "I have to help Jay, I have to help Jay." she repeated to herself in her head.

"Bianca....Hurry....please...."

"I'm coming Jay, just hold on." she whispered more to herself then to him.

Remembering all too well what happened in the bedroom upstairs Bianca held up the candlestick up as she slowly walked towards the sound of his voice. As she reached the corner of the room she saw a door. Listening to the whispers she knew Jay had to be behind it.

"I'm coming Jay." she said.

Opening the door and looking down at the steps she realized that they led to the basement. As she began to walk further down the steps Jays voice got louder.

"Bianca....help me...."

"I'm coming Jay." she exclaimed, sure now that it was truly Jays voice she heard.

Relieved that Jay was ok Bianca rushed down the rest of the stairs and held out the candle stick. She walked into further into the room, and called out to Jay.

"Jay? Where are you? Talk to me." she called out into the dark. When there was no response she called out again. "Jay? Are you ok? Say something so I can find you!" she exclaimed.

As Bianca walked quickly through the room looking for Jay, she hardly took notice until she almost tripped on something. Turning around to see what it was she was horrified when she saw that it was a leg. Walking slowly back to it she knelt and held her candle closely up to the leg and recognized the jeans that Jay was wearing. As she brought the candle up the length of the leg and the rest of the body her heart almost stopped when she realized that it was Jay, but his throat was slashed and he was clearly dead. It was then she heard something behind her, and before she could jump up and turn around she felt a sharp blow to the back of her head.

Falling to the floor, she dropped the candle. It rolled away from her and the flame went out. Her head was spinning and her vision was blurry and as she began to close her eyes she saw the flicker of the candle being lit again. As she looked past its flame she saw the same figure who had had Jay upstairs. The same figure with the bloodied hands and shabby clothes. The same ghostly face, and as she opened her mouth to scream she realized it was worthless.

And as she watched the figure come closer her eyes closed and she knew she'd never see anything again... 1
