COURSE DESCRIPTION: Much of the trail is rocky with some steep ups and downs. It passes through two craters, through a lava tube and also lush rainforest. The park is at the 4,000 feet elevation.

Pets are not allowed. Not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. Eating is 3+

START/FINISH: Kilauea Visitor Center is located 1/4 mile from the park entrance on the right. It is approximately 30 miles from Hilo and 95 miles from Kailua-Kona.

START/FINISH TIMES: Center opens daily from 7:45a.m. to 5:00p.m. Must complete walk before 5:OO p.m.

REGISTRATION: Pick up a start envelope, map and written directions from the self service YRVE activities box.

CONTROL POINT: At the info board "SOUNDS OF THE RAIN FOREST" located near the Thurston Lava Tube, Name one of three native birds mentioned.

AMENITIES: Water and bathrooms located at the visitor's center, the Control point (Thurston Lava Tube), and at the Volcano House (restaurant/ gift shop complex) on the rim of the Caldera.

MISCELLANEOUS:
There are many days of sunshine but be prepared for mist and rain.
The National park charges an entrance fee of $10.00 (USD)  per car into the park and the pass is good for 7 days.
Park has one hotel (Volcano House), some rental cabins and a campground. Kilauea Military camp is located within the park and has accommodations for active military and retirees.
There are many bed and breakfasts in the Volcano Area and several
hotels in Hilo,

DIRECTIONS: IF COMING FROM KAILUA-KONA, USE HIGHWAY 11. Distance from Kailua-Kona to Kilauea Visitors Center is 95 miles south east and will take about 2 and 1/2 hours of driving time.

IF COMING FROM HILO, USE HIGHWAY 11. Distance from Hilo is 30 miles southwest and wilt take about 30 minutes of driving time.
