The Netscape version of dynamic HTML (with a lower-case 'd') displays Web pages as a series of layers that the user can display or hide on the client side.

If this exercise page had been designed to be viewed with Netscape Communicator 4.x or higher, there would be a separate LAYER for each of the three menu selections. Selecting one menu item would cause the other two to become invisible until the user selects another item.

Netscape layers are similar to layers used in many graphics design programs. They are, in many ways, easier to understand and to use than the scripting required to produce the same effect in a Microsoft browser environment. Unfortunately, since LAYER is a proprietary Netscape markup, only Netscape browsers recognize it.

Future versions of Netscape Communicator will support the version of DHTML recommended by W3C.
