Dancing Tears

I blinked. Once, twice, three times. There was nothing out of the ordinary in the room I was in. Nothing disturbed, nothing out of place or out of the ordinary. Nothing scary was happening like blood or screams or ghosts. Just nothing. Still, it was creepy. I don’t know why, my best friend, Ronie was there.

Sara just kept on blinking like she had something in her eye. I asked her if she was okay, but she didn’t say anything. I asked her again, and she said that everything was fine. She was acting so weird! I mean, we talked like normal, but she was all shivery and she glanced around the room really nervously. I tried telling her some jokes that she would normally go into hysterical fits of laughter over, but she just smirked, and asked, “Is it me, or is it really cold in here?” I told her that it was just she. Even so, she made me go and get a blanket for her.

Ronie was just sitting there, not scared at all of the fact that there was this weird unearthly noise everywhere; like aliens landing, and sat making stupid jokes that I had heard before. I tried to huddle close to her out of some weird unconscious thing. Maybe I thought her ignorance to the noise would rub off on me and I would calm down. But it didn’t work; she just thought I was being stupid. But something had to be making that noise. It wasn’t the wind, the wind doesn’t growl quite like that. It wasn’t the fire, the fire pops every once in a while. It was so hard to explain, and when I tried to, Ronie just thought I was telling her a really cool scary story.

Sara was telling one of her not-so-scary stories again, only this time, she was really creeping me out. It wasn’t the story, it was just the way she told it. It was like she actually believed that there was some weird noise out to get us all. She paused every once in a while, giving it a dramatic effect. It was so cool! She was such a good storyteller, I thought. Insanity was the only other choice, and Sara wasn’t crazy. It was so real, I didn’t know what was happening, and it was subtle, yet sudden. It was

There again! It was the noise. It had stopped for a while, while I was explaining to Ronie. She just stared at me like I was telling one of my stupid scary stories. I said over and over that it was real, and she nodded her head and told me to go on. She was often really sarcastic, so I got mad and stopped talking for a while. Then the noise came back, howling louder than ever! I covered my ears and started screaming from the pain. It was so loud! Screaming at my hands, whatever it was was furious that I didn’t listen to it. It banged at my hands tore at my hair! I opened my eyes; Ronie sat staring at me, I couldn’t hear anything but the noise, and I think she was saying, "Sara, you okay? What wrong? Say something. Move, breathe, anything!" How stupid could she be? I was jumping up and down from the pain while the nothing vented its rage upon my head.

Sara froze. After she trailed off from her story, she froze. Her eyes wide open; she didn’t blink, she didn’t move, she didn’t even breathe! I was so scared. I thought she had died. When I touched her, she was cold. Dead. I shrieked. Her mom and dad came out to see what was the matter. I didn’t know whether to scream some more or cry. I did both and went into hysterics, as Sara’s mom and dad later told me.

I suddenly started sinking into the ground. The screaming gone, I started sobbing in relief and joy. I sank deeper into the ground, like I was sinking in quicksand. My parents and Ronie were looking at the spot where I had been sitting. I did too. There was nothing there. Why were they talking to an empty spot? And why couldn’t I hear them? I realized that I was deaf from the noise. I sank deeper and deeper into the ground. No one came to save me. In my self-pity, the tears danced down my face once again. I sank deeper and deeper. No one heard my cries, no one heard me at all. And the nothing that had stopped screaming, sat back, smiled, and watched.
