You don't have to be a professional to Capture the Moments in your family's lives. All you need to do is keep you camera loaded, handy and use if often. I am an amateur photographer. I have never won any awards for my pictures. But I have two little boys who love to have their pictues taken and look at them with pride when they come back from being developed. We also have two sets of grandparents who treasure each "shipment" of the second set of prints we always get.
