We were early in the season for everything
it seemed.
Two days after Kailash, we had the choice of taking the "short
route" which was direct to Qomolungma or the long route back to
Shigatse and then on--about twice as far. This meant that we had to entice the
local ferry-builders to change their schedule a few days sooner to accommodate
our crossing. Somewhat surprisingly, they accommodated our need and the
morning of, we watched them restring cables, re-anchor the terminals, and lash
together the ferry itself.
The Brahmaputra is still quite cold here--only a few hundred kilometers from
its headwaters coming off of the very same Mt. Kailash--and deep enough to
submerge a ferry and truck if something went wrong. But hey, we obviously made
it, eh?
