The pass was reached after an incredible hike where I
felt not exhausted, not physically tired, just unable to keep a normal pace.
5700m is about 18,700 ft and the highest I've been outside of an airplane.
As the monks and I waited for the rest of the crew, I too placed my own
offerings to the gods here on the pass on the kora round the holiest Buddhist
mountain. A few crows were about, hovering in place on the brisk wind and
circling a few feet over our reclining heads. I took that as an auspicious sign
that despite the late hour and the long climb down that all would be well.
Another half hour and we were going down again, across the talus and
snowfields.
