Ashes In The Snow

As the sun was sinking low
A cold wind began to blow
Picking up both ice and snow
Gaining strength as it did go

Travelers were on the road that day
Six carloads looking for a place to stay
They saw the storm from far away
And for their safety, they began to pray

All the while the storm did grow
Forming a haze with ice and snow
Dropping the clouds to the ground below
Into this darkness, the travelers did go

Swirling snow reflected the light
Hiding the road from their sight
The howling wind added to their fright
As the travelers prayed for shelter that night

Bumper to bumper, all in a row
The lead driver thought he saw a glow
A single light pierced the haze and snow
Showing them which direction to go

They found an answer to their prayer
An open church, with nobody there.
It was a warm shelter that all could share
A shelter provided out of care

As the storm blew through the night
The church was quiet, warm and bright
The travelers rested and greeted dawn's light
Awed by the beauty that formed overnight

The travelers were soon on their way
Thankful for a bright sunny day
And soon the church had slipped away
From their sight, though memories did stay

Now that the travelers were no longer there
The church turned to ash, suspended in air
The Lord had listened and answered their prayer
Providing a shelter that was no longer there

It had happened a year ago
The church had burned, and none did go
To check what caused that fiery glow
Now its ashes lay upon the newly fallen snow
