After the ratsnake, we had a dry spell in pets and animals for a while. Then one day, my son heard about two ferrets that needed a home. He begged and begged until I gave in. The people brought them over in a huge wooden cage.
Jerry named them Saphire and Tempest, big names for a kid of 9 yrs old. I told him that they would smell and could bite, but he didn't believe me. He decided to keep them in his room, loose until bedtime. He spend every waking hour with them. They were really cute and funny. We both spent hours playing with them or watching their crazy antics.
The day finally came when he got bit. It was an accident, but it really hurt him. Just prior to getting bit, he noticed that they did smell and put their cage outside and spent time with them outside. Now he decided that I was right and looked for a new owner for them. The people that took Saphire and Tempest didn't want the cage, which actually turned into a good thing.
We lived in Bradenton, FL; which is next to Sarasota. We had heard about the "Pelican Man" in Sarasota, who was a wildlife rehabilator for pelicans. There was an article in the paper asking for donations to help him save the pelicans. We called the "Pelican Man" and told him that we had a large cage that he could have if he would pick it up. He said he was happy to pick it up. When he came to our home, he brought a "Pelican Man" tee-shirt for Jerry and had a picture taken of my son and him standing infront of his "Pelican Man" truck.
My son was so proud that he was able to help out for a good cause. That was 13 yrs ago, but we still talk about the ferrets and the "Pelican Man" to this day.
