Bibliography

Hailstorm Over Truk Lagoon
By the late Klaus Lindemann.

An very complete and well researched book on the shipwrecks in Truk and Operation Hailstone.

WWII Wrecks of the Kwajalein and Truk Lagoons
By Dan E. Bailey.

Thorough and accurate. Well illustrated, too.

New! WWII Wrecks of the Truk Lagoon

Updated and expanded. Released in March, 2001.

The Imperial Japanese Navy Website
By Jon Parshall.

Great information on the Japanese aircraft and warships that defended Truk.

Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy, 1869-1945
By Hansgeorg Jentschura, et al.

Out of print, but an excellent reference if you can find it.

Carrier War
Published during the war by Pocket Books, with some censorship. Excellent biographies of the US pilots and "first person" accounts of the formation and development of Task Force 38/58.

A Battle History of the Imperial Japanese Navy: 1941-1945
By Paul Dull.

Another worthwhile out of print reference.

Aleutians, Gilberts and Marshalls June 1942 - April 1944 (History of United States Naval Operations in World War II, Volume 7)
By Samuel Eliot Morison.

One book of an outstanding series, volume 7 covers the Truk raid as it was planned; partly to protect the Eniwetok landings and partly to soften up Truk for its planned invasion. Thankfully, the actual invasion of Truk never happened-the loss of life would have been hideous.

Ghost Fleet of the Truk Lagoon
By Willaim Stewart.

Somewhat melodramatic at times, but Ghost Fleet has some good stuff including actual US Navy documentation regarding the attatck.

Vice Admiral Chuichi Hara. Unforgettable Foe.
United States Naval Institute Proceedings, October, 1970. Page 45-59.

Great background information on the man who commanded the 4th Fleet at Truk until the surrender.

National Archives and Records Administration

Many excellent photos.

The Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships on-line
Information on the USN ships.

Lagoon of Lost Ships
By Jacques Cousteau, et al.

A 1971 television program from The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau series. Unfortunately, the program predated home video equipment and the Cousteau Society has no master copy. However, the Pacific Wreck Database sent me a copy. Thanks Justin! Great footage of the Cousteau crew exploring and plundering the shipwrecks of Truk Lagoon.
