FORMER PULVERIZER OWNER TURNS HIS BACK ON GIGLIO
A scandal is brewing in the CJRL before the 1999 season has even started. John Michael Piorkowski, former owner of the Pulverizers, has loaned his drafting services to Joanne Rogers and her Hayley's Heroes franchise. Last season, Piorkowski leased his services to Mike Giglio of the Knuckle Knockers. The results? An eighth place finish. When reached in Germany for comment, Giglio stated "John and the Knuckle Knockers had an unwritten agreement that he would draft for me for the 1999 and 2000 seasons, then be kicked upstairs to a front office position. Now he's jumped ship. All I can say is John will see me in court!"
Joanne Rogers recently moved to North Carolina and is unable to attend this year's Auction Draft. Rogers commented "I wish Mike would lighten up! I think he is still mad at me for kicking him out of the Black Flags partnership. John Michael is my brother-in-law. If he wants to work for the family, who am I to argue?"
In a related development, Mike Giglio has been rumored to be in negotiations with a new baseball partner. This partner would be entirely in charge of the baseball operations for the Knuckle Knockers for the next two years. Your CJRL news team will give you more on this story as it becomes available.
IMPORTANT DATES AND EVENTS IN THE CJRL
RULES DISCUSSION CHAT
Friday, April 2, 8:00 p.m. We will discuss the rules agenda which will be officially discussed and voted upon on Auction Draft Day. This is an optional, informal "chat", using the new chat room which can be accessed from this web site via the "League Business" link. The rules and ideas agenda is described in the next story
PROTECTED ROSTERS
Saturday, April 3. Must be turned in to Larry Johnson at Art Johnson's house in Jackson by 7:00 p.m. Be sure to make 13 copies of your protected roster (one for each CJRL team), and include any long-term contract information (salary and signing bonus). If long-term contract information is not provided at this time it is assumed the player is kept at his option year.
You may email me with the above information, but it must be by 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 2. Please make sure that if you do email it to me that it is in an understandable format, with all information included. I don't want to have to call multiple teams for clarification. Feel free to call me with any questions you may have.
AUCTION DRAFT DAY
Saturday, April 17 at 3:00 p.m. Location still to be determined. Be sure to bring all of your league fee ($65), your stat fee (approx. $36), and any signing bonus fees you need to pay. Information regarding food and location will be emailed as soon as it is available.
The first 1/2 hour to hour will be used to discuss and vote upon the possible rule changes listed at the end of this email. Please think through your ideas about these rules beforehand so as to keep the agenda moving. Better yet, participate in the RULES CHAT mentioned above!
NEW RULE CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE 1999 SEASON
The following are rule changes under consideration for 1999:
1. Northshore Software vs. Rotonews free site.
2. Midnight call deadline for transactions change to 8:00 a.m. EST, with calls allowed 24 hours.
RATIONALE: Some team owners may work at different hours than “9 to 5”, so this would give all teams an even opportunity to check recent news. The 24-hour calling may also help in the same manner.
3. Players won by FAAB bids of $5.00 or more have a temporary one-year long-term contract. This means that any player won by bid of $5.00 or more must be kept the following year by the acquiring team, or can be traded. However, the one-year temporary long-term contract follows the player to the team he is traded to. For example, if Ken Griffey Jr. comes over to the National League, and Team A wins the FAAB bid with a bid of $13.50, he must be kept the following year at $13.50. If he is traded in the year he is acquired via FAAB bid, the team who trades for him must also abide by keeping him the following year (or can again trade him).
RATIONALE: Would make for more realistic FAAB bidding, and all teams would be involved in more bids, not just those with $35.00 left. For example, a team would probably not bid $35.00 on Griffey because they would have to keep him at that price the following year, and most (if not all) teams would not trade for him because they also would have to keep him at $35.00 for the following year. Teams that may have used some but not all of their FAAB would still be involved in a bid for Griffey. More teams would be interested at the trade deadline, not just the teams with $35.00 FAAB remaining.
This change would also cut the so-called “dump trades” by having less “rental players” whose price is so high that teams do not consider keeping them.
4. If players are traded to the American League, CJRL teams may elect to keep them and continue to accumulate the player’s statistics from the American League.
RATIONALE: When a player is traded to the other league, it is not the fault of the CJRL owner. As mentioned in a recent issue of Baseball Weekly, the reason that stats were not kept on these traded players when Rotisserie Baseball originated was that stat reports were based on the weekly listings in USA TODAY. The National League report was listed on Tuesday, and the American League was listed on Wednesday. Allowing stats to be kept across leagues would have been a headache for the stat keeper. Just this year the League of Alternative Baseball Reality (LABR) has made the change to allow stats to be kept across leagues.
5. Allow for 2 days for teams to make moves, as opposed to the current practice of 1 day.
RATIONALE: It would give teams more time to research information, and there are times when people are not home or available to make moves or check recent news.
Please note that these are the rules that CJRL team owners suggested. This year's suggestions came from the Spiders, Ladykillers, Devil Dogs, Super Kings, and the Razmataz (not necessarily in that order). I make no statement here for or against any of the proposals. This will be done during the RULES CHAT on Friday, April 3 at 8:00 p.m. Remember: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", however, if something can be done to make our league better, let's do it. Official voting will take place on Auction Draft Day before the beginning of the draft.
